Just picked up a bargain on Ebay an electric hydrolic splitter for $50. While i was picking it up there was a load of wood which had been sitting for 10 months which the guy said i can have as well. Win win ==c

He said the splitter hadn't had much use but had been sitting in the garage for a couple of years. I brought it home and rigged up a working table which i can store the splitter inside and put the splitter on top when its in use - its like a big crate. I put a tarp on top to keep it weather proof.

Tied splitting a little softwood no problem. But tried the wood i picked up with the splitter and even though
the wood has some major cracking on the face. I thought it must be the baby splitter but i tried with the Fiskars and it was very hard to split. It seems the splitter will split all the easy stuff but the hard stuff i will have to continue with the Fiskars.

When i had finished with the electric splitter i noticed that it was struggling to go back to its starting position. Anybody else had this problem? i might try and fill the hydrolic oil up and make sure the side bars are straight. other than that not sure what to do with it any ideas?

Also put a picture of George our friendly King Parrot who comes to watch me splitting the wood.

There is an air release some where on the front that needs to be cracked in order to let the air out of the cylinder. This might fix the forward issue but I am not sure about the going back problem. I can go through some pretty gnarly stuff with mine. It is also possible the seals are bad on it too.

There is a thumb screw on the front of the splitter just above the oil plug. i assume that is the air valve?

I will try and find a manual for the splitter. They seem to be all the same built in china with a different name on them.

Mine is a ryobi 4 ton and looks different but it should be the same in operation. If you know anyone who can have the motor checked out as well.

They're fairly common here. They have 1 ton pay load but a bit on the small size as it has 5 seats and a tray. they are so handy with it being 4 wheel drive as well.

The motor sounds fine - but I can bring it in to work and strip it down. SO is the air bleed valve in the same position?

The air bleed screw is in the upper right corner on the front of mine. It looks like a wing nut.

Nice score/s.
Wood looks to be pretty dry, may be a tad difficult to split, but looks ready to burn ;)

Bet George like the free food too, popcorn & a treat with the show :)
May like some water/beer too.He looks a little parched after eating.

Real nice pics, and a nice load of wood, what kind is it,is that parrot a pet or wild, truck is unique also.

Nice score -Also, King George rocks!

Looking at your first splitter pic, my air screw thingy is just below the wedge, top right corner of the end plate thing. I can't pick it out in your pic - it's a bit fuzzy at that location. It just has to be left loose/open, so air can go in & out past it. You close it for transport so you don't lose oil. Mine stays in my basement, I don't think I'd leave it outside especially all winter - I'd be worried about corrosion/condensation in the electrics & motor. These things likely aren't that well built that way (winterproofing).

Edit: If it has sat for a long time maybe you just need some lube where the ram plate slides. And hard to tell from a picture, but I don't think there's any way my little electric job would touch that wood - it does look hard to split. Does it have a tonnage rating on it?

Nice score Auzzie! Hope you get the splitter working. That little truck has a one ton capacity! Why do I find that hard to believe? It would seem like a 1/2 ton at most. Very cool though. Gotta love the 4 wheel drive.

I leave mine in my shed, it is covered but it gets plenty cold. Havent had a problem yet, you most definitely have to open that bleed screw and cycle the ram back and forth a few times to get any bubbles out of the system. When i use mine, i have it on a upward slope so the motor and pump are lower than the end of the ram. You should also check the level of the fluid.

The wood worked out at ~ a cord but i'm still trying to split some of it, not sure if it is so hard to split due to it being dry as as i haven't had a problem before. The parrot is a King parrot and he's wild but he comes and see's us every day he comes with his 'wife' we call Mildred, but she is a bit timid. George will eat out of your hand :)

Thats where i was going wrong i didn't crack open the bleed screw, also mine is in reverse i.e. motor and pump were on the high side. I will turn it around and bleed - i will have a go this weekend tooo busy scrounging wood this week - but Thats another thread.

The Truck is rated to 950 Kgs (2094 lbs) one of the reasons i bought it. never leave home without it ;)
