Free locust, if you happen to be near Pittsburgh

I don't know if this belongs here or in the classifieds section, but in case anyone here is near Pittsburgh, I wanted to point out this Craigslist ad:

This is just a few miles from my house, but I've already got all I can store. A suburban homeowner had several trees taken down. The wood is mostly black locust, but there's also some silver maple. It's already bucked and piled up in the yard, and the homeowner is doing some regrading so he doesn't mind if you drive right up to the pile. I'm not very experienced at judging loose wood piles, but I think there's around 3 cords still there.

3 cords of mostly locust, bucked, just looking for a new home....brings tears to me eyes! Wood is like time spent with a beautiful woman....you can't ever get enough! Now get going and grab that wood. Do it for us out here who could only dream about finding such a scrounge. Besides being short on storage space, I can only take about 1/5 cord per trip because my hauling vehicle is a 1994 Volvo station wagon. I may yet grab some more of it (my wife is even encouraging this, which surprises me) but there are limits. My neighbors are already amused by the racks and stacks on my patio.

Also: though this is my first season and may be an aberration, I've been surprised at the number of offers of free firewood in the area. I'm in a 1950's suburban development, and between houses there are mature hardwood trees all over the place. When one has to come down, the homeowners often save money by giving the wood away so the tree service doesn't have to haul it away. Just across the street there's a good-sized white oak scheduled to come down in the spring, and I may not even try to get any of it because I don't have the space to store wood for 2-3 years while it dries. In my circumstance, faster-drying locust and mulberry (both common around here) seem like better choices.

Thanks jon1270! That scrounge is as close to perfect as I have ever seen!

One of the long timers here should start a "SCROUNGE OF THE MONTH CLUB". I would nominate " jon1270 multi cords of split and bucked locust" for December. It would be neat in a couple of years to flip through photo and discriptions of the great kills .

I didn't get quite that lucky. The wood is already bucked, but I did the splitting. I can fit more in the Volvo that way.

I don't know how I missed this thread when it was first posted but I just called the CL ad and they still have a lot of wood available. I'm going to drive over this weekend and pick up a load. My trailer will haul 1.5 cord so its worth a trip for me if just for the opportunity to try some black locust.

I brought home a 16x6 trailer load today, and might go back in the future if its not all gone.It was a 58 mile drive so I spent about $40 in gas on the round trip, but that's not bad at all for almost 1.5 cords of bucked locust.

Wow, that stuff is heavy. I picked up the yard cart in the second photo last year on CL cheap, the log cart was from Harbor Freight yesterday, original price $69.99, on sale for $40(?), with the 20% off coupon $33 out the door. Cheaply made but served us well today. Both served us well bringing the wood down from the top of their back yard in the third photo:

Fortunately my oldest son (20, in the photo) came home from college Thursday night and was able to help. My youngest son is 16 and my usual helper but couldn't come along due to a stomach bug. I wouldn't mind picking up a second load next weekend if the weather permits. There are probably two more trailer loads left at least, including the silver maple.
