Finally got the Red Oaks from Sandy split. That pile is 85% Red Oak, 10% Pignut Hickory, and 5% Elm (type unkown).

Anybody care to guess how many cords it's going to stack out to be? (lots more than I thought just looking at the rounds!)

I love this game...Price is Right rules or closest wins? Heap looks like 20x10x7? So, I'll call it 20x10x7x2/3/192=4.86111 cord. That Oak looks like it was pure pleasure to split.

Some of it was, some of it wasn't.

A couple of 24"+ rounds were knotty and burly. The I&O went through them just fine, maybe had to run the wedge down both sides of the round. So long as you ran the wedge thru the nastiest sections, the rest popped open without trouble. Love that "crunch" oak makes when it comes apart.

Oh Price is Right for sure, might as well make it interesting.

EDIT: Pile is roughly 27 feet long, 12 feet wide at the base, and about 6-7 ft at the peak.

That's the truth. Thing is taking up enough room in the driveway for sure! Can't wait to see it all stacked.

That's smart splitting it in the driveway...forces you to stack it before you get more. Anytime I get Oak it gets mixed into the heap for an extended period and then has to be picked out so that it gets stacked separately from the faster drying stuff.

Im putting in a 3 2/3 cord guess with the idea that splits are 16" And you stack tight. No dogs or Squirrels.
This is good practice... you will have nice straight piles with those splits.

I'll be generous and say you have over 4 cord there.
In any case, it's certainly enough to heat my house for a year.

A generous 4-ish would be my guess. Great looking pile of firewood, in any case, regardless of just how many cords it stacks out to be. It's a bunch, that's fer sure. That's my new firewood quantity unit...the Bunch. I know a Bunch when I see one. Rick

This should be in every kid's calculus book in school...how to calculate the volume of a wood heap. Advanced problem could be if person 1 stacks at 33 ft3 per hour and person 2 splits at 120 ft3 per hour, what is the price of goats in China?

Actually I cut those @ 18" +/-. Planning to build racks to stack 'em on. 10 feet long by 5 feet high. That should give me slightly over 1 cord per pair of racks. 1.171875 cords per pair to be exact.

I LOVE seeing a heap of splits like that, especially hickory and oak! You gotta be careful, with all that freshly split wood aroma floating around the neighborhood, you're liable to attract another hoarder.....

I'd hate to see you get arrested for kicking someone's azz.....

BTW I'm guessing an honest 4.5 cord......that's quite a pile of wood!

Really didn't have much choice, but thanks! Coolest part about the whole haul is 95% of that (all but the elm) was harvested within' 500 feet of my property, so as fuel goes, it was cheap!

HAHA Mine's getting thick now,really helps on those cold windy days.By early April I'm tired of it,off it goes.Its 3-4 inches past my chin by then.When we get those rare 3-4 days in a row of 65-70 degree temps in late March,its quite uncomfortable.

-smacks forehead- Darn! I meant to toss it in there too. Most of that pile was indeed split vertical since the vast majority of the rounds were 18"+. I think I blew through the smaller stuff, working horizontal, in less than an hour.
