Cleaned my stove pipe first in 3 years

BTW, it's not code legal to have a shut off on the hot side of a water heater.

I always thought that also..but where I work we have 60 buildings with 60 water heaters and they all have a shut off on both sides,.
They are inspected every year.
I guess they are really counting on the PRV..some but not all have expansion tanks.

Dang it's like pick on big daddy day here. A note on the water heater though, there's no code on a shutoff if for hot side here. It's nice to have if you ever need to work on plumbing in your house. PITA to drain the whole tank to fix a pipe then refill and reheat. Valve makes that work much easier.

I do hope you read it as constructive criticism. I'm certain if any of the mod crew thought people where getting hard on him simply for the fun of it, it'd be game over.

Agreed. We owe a debt of gratitude to Big Daddy for stepping up and being honest about a scary situation. Basements can be a dangerous location. They are out of sight and out of mind as long as things are functioning as expected. That doesn't mean they're safe. The problem with fudging a little here and there is that eventually you have a lot of problems that can bite you when you least need them. I discovered this when a water filter burst and filled our small utility basement with water 3 ft deep. Overnight this normally dry area became a life threatening hazard zone. That's why we emphasize safety and following code. You never know when the crap is going to hit the fan. Usually it's when you least want or expect it.

The point here is the stove install and all of the stuff in close proximity. Obviously the long horizontal pipe is to mitigate some of those problems. But they create the buildup problem and a couple of other ones Nobody is ragging on him. Just trying to keep him safe. And there is no upper limit on keeping him safe.

I would make a couple of suggestions but in the Ash Can he has already told me that I try to act like I know it all. And of course I responded that it is because I do.

Awe Brother Bart has a caring heart that's nice. Feel free to suggest anything to me. Just know I will be cleaning often both the stove pipe and chimney.
I just wanted to share what a mess I had. I learned here that the horizontal single wall stovepipe is accelerating the buildup of unwanted materials in my pipe.
I did not do the install. The installation was done by a chimney sweep which installs stoves for the stove shop where I purchased the stove. I think it meets all code requirements but that doesn't mean it is going to work great.
I now know the way it sets requires diligent cleaning which I have no problem with.

Well that truly would be a real shame; those few pictures really revealed how quickly stuff can clog up the works with our stove setups. I really admire the OP for so openly sharing them. Really those few pictures more than anything that I've seen so far completely convinced me to clean the stove, stove pipe and chimney pipe at least two times each and every year. Just did the full thing yesterday as matter of fact. Seriously, whoever took these down please please reconsider whether it was a moderator or the OP; it really could save someone's life. Thanks for the consideration.

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here, but if this were in my home, I would be having a long and serious talk with both the owner of the store where you purchased the stove, and the sweep who installed this setup.

It would appear to me that someone either didn't know or didn't care about the quality and safety of your installation.

With the photos you have, it should be relatively simple to negotiate getting the poor installation corrected, and hopefully some cost break for replacing the thimble and single wall pipe.

Seriously, I can honestly say I've seen worse. Not on any chimney I ever burned in though. Better to see picture like that then pictures like this.
