I'm guessing you are referring to N/S vs E/W burning?

If we're guessing, my guess is that he's saying primary air turned down produces a longer-burning fire than primary air wide open.

Good to hear that you're warm again, the dogs seem to appreciate it too. Running with the air open just sends the heat up the flue. My guess is that it's really clean now. ;)

By restricting the primary air once the stove is going, the draft pulls harder on the secondary air. This combusts the wood gas and on comes the heat. Get a stove top thermometer to compliment the flue thermometer. As you decrease the air you'll see the flue temps go down and the stove top temps go up.

Glad to hear it's working out for you Loon! Condar makes a stovetop thermometer and I found that the best place is under the swing out cook top left side and just to the left of the flue collar but towards the front. I can post a pic if this doesn't make sense. If you have an IR temp gun you can verify this..

Great looking hearth and stove Loon!

This is the one that I have..

Your right Dan and thanks again Gang ==c

Put 3 medium sized dead Elm rounds in before bed waited a few minutes for the secondary to kick in then pinched it off about 95% woke up at quarter to 4 and went straight to the stove..Had 3 dead Elm logs still cooking away !!! ;) House was warm but it was also only minus 8c out The other night when i couldnt figure the stove out was minus 22c..
Heading into town in a bit to grab another thermometer and see if i can find a nice stove rake.

Gonna place it where you mentiond Ray.

Stirred the ashes this morning threw in another medium round Elm and gonna let the ashes burn down till i get back from town..Minus 6c right now and its Plus 23c=74f in the house right now

WTG Terry sounds like you've got the T5 figured out.. I also suggest burning 2-3 pieces of wood minimum at a time. One at a time will not be enough in my opinion..

Ray

Ray, sounds like he was trying to burn down his coal bed.
Man, sounds like this stove is doing great now Terry. Good on ya', and the guys helping.
Love this place.
Dave I think you may be right.. He didn't specify so I thought he was trying keep the coals there to avoid relighting.. Helping is what we're about here most of the time ;) I always learn new things here and pass on what I have learned.. Great environment :)

Begreen gave me that little pointer Dave  Worked great and that was another problem i had the other nite..The box was full of ashes and i just kept throwing wood in with the draft almost all the way open :p

Just got back from town and picked up a couple items for the 'NEW' stove :)

Dont go by the temps in the picture as the stove is still cooling down and the house is very warm, mind you its only minus 3c and sunny with no wind..

Ray the place i put the thermometer lets me see it through the grates, is it close to where yours is?

Come on Ray.....give him a measurement already.;lol

I think those would be X and Z axis points to plot it. Or, take a picture.==c
LOL OK but in a little while.. I did offer a pic a few posts back so I will do this as promised ;) Think I will try this with the iPhone :)
