I'd say that stove is purring along. I wouldn't want to get much hotter than that..

Ray is that where your temp is normally at?

This was 20 minutes after i got home from work tonight and i am thinking the stove is getting too hot? But the pipe was reading decent..

It hit 760f

Looks good Terry.. That's probably just a temp spike.. I would lower that air all the way down.. Stack temp looks good! Are you burning a load of smaller wood that will drive the temp up..

Ray

Ok good to know ;) Ya i threw in a few smaller rounds to get it rolling again but when i cut it down the stove didnt want to come down? but it did after a bit..
Up to bigger rounds now at about 95% closed and its cruising great again

Thanks..

YVW Terry now you're cooking with gas ;) Small splits will make the stove get pretty hot..

Ray

Just checked the stove top again and found this Ray..

Its reading almost 800f and the pipe is still in the creasote zone?

The fire is going very slow and the secondary is working fine..I cant find anywhere in the owner manual what the max temp should be under?

Diane its a 2011 450 Suzuki KingQuad and has been a great bike. Works fine in normal amounts of snow but did get it stuck a few days back in big snow ==c The back seat was basically bought for these 2 ::-) Quite a bit of storage space in it :)

I'm a little surprised you are seeing that temp with the air control mod. Try swapping the thermometers just for yucks to see if they are consistent. About this time I would be turning on the blower. Have the dogs started shedding their coats?

I took the one off the pipe and set it on the stove bg it read the same. And Emma sheds year round :p :)

I didnt purchase the fan when i got the stove and maybe i should stop in and pick one up as that seems very hot for it? Are they a loud fan? I guess i could aim the fan i have by it now which should help cool it down..

Gonna stop into the store again today and find out what the max running temps can be. There doesnt seem to be blockage as i have no smoke or smell when i open the door and also just cleaned the chimney a few weeks back?

It was quite windy lastnight but i cant see it being a draft issue? And like i said the fire looked nice and slow, i am burning standing no bark dead Elm (rock hard) but the temp diff doesnt make sence?

Thanks eh..

Terry

I didn't know that you could use a surface thermometer on a flue. Or are they both probe thermometers?

It did say on the package Dan to install 18in up the pipe?

Yes, that's what my probe thermometer said. I just didn't know that surface thermometers were recommended for the surface of the flue.

They're sold all over the place specifically for outside flue reading.
Recommended or not is another matter entirely.
I use one, and it gives me something to use as an indicator of how the fire is doing. Just have to know that the inside temp is approx. double the outside and I'm gooder to go.
I might rather have the probe type, but haven't done it yet.

They are both thermometers. The difference between them is the scales indicating normal burn temp, overfire, etc.

Well, I imagine people are shedding some clothes at that temp too. :)

The blower for the stove is pretty quiet. It has a very low hum when on. At low to medium speed you can barely hear it. At high speed you can hear the fan, but not so much that you have to shout over it. With the blower on medium speed you should see a 100-150F temp drop on the stove top. The downside is that it's a pricey devil.

Terry that doesn't make much sense to me to see those temps.. I am wondering if your pipe is sooted up so it doesn't transfer the temp to the surface of the pipe? I really don't trust those thermometers and have an IR temp scanner to keep them honest.. I have the feeling your temps aren't as high as those gauges are telling you.. I use the blower and it is quiet compared to many blowers. This is the IR scanner I use but there are other good ones out there.

And went to the store again today and had a long chat with the owner..Told him what i have been told by you all and its great advice!!
He told me not to worry about the 800f mark as these stoves are made for it.
Pretty hard not to believe him when its 'my house' we were talking about..But i am still gonna try and keep it lower.

Asked him about the fan bg and he didnt push it, which is fine with me at $300.00 :p I am gonna keep the pedestal fan in place though as it does help for sure..

OK cool Terry 502 isn't crazy hot you should be fine.. Keep the secondaries lit in the early burn and you should be OK when the coals come into play..
