Douglas fir. Do I hear a ding ding ding ding?

I plead ignorace being from the right coast. But my guess would be oak. No oak I've ever seen.

Bark looks a lot like Bur Oak.Guessing Big Leaf Maple?,it often has large amount tan/brownish heartwood.

That would be no...

and no...

I am amused. I though this would be easy. This species is not specific to the PNW, or even the left coast.

Black walnut?

Meh, I'm a newb :)

Black Locust, though the heart is more brown than yellowish more commonly seen.

And the rounds seem much larger than the majority of black locust I've seen on the boards so far. We don't have them here

Yah, that is the same here. BL only gets to about a foot in diameter here, and there is not much of it in the PNW.

Oh crap. COTTONWOOD!! ;em

OK, another BIG hint. If that were BL, I would be out there right now loading it up in my truck and singing in firewood nirvana. Same with maple, doug fir or oak. Of course, I would not be the only one there and we would likely be competing over the wood and all there would be left is a pile of dust as of 3 hours ago.

I am not, and there were 6 cords left when I started this thread.

OK. The bark looks identical to chestnut oak. The inner wood is not represented correctly. Chestnut oak has a brown heartwood that extends out closer to the bark.

OK here is my guess.... cottonwood. Bark looks right, bit I have never seen the inside of a round. What do I win?

Well, you are both horseshoes and hand grenade close. No prize given out as of yet.

Sassafras? Not familiar with that species. No... not sassafras.

This wood is dead common in North America. The heartwood is a giveaway, and it is not cottonwood, so it must be... either...

Some sort of poplar?

hickory. lucky man you are!
