I'm kinda a bug when it comes to burning. I have burned several different kinds of pellets in my new PB 105 boiler. I have witnessed it light several different pellets and just this morning I noticed whith the summersets it took just a bit longer to light (I have the newest style icniter) . when it lit it was with such force that air came out the slot above the observation window(slot that keeps window soot free). seems to me these pellets light just a bit harder. Also my observations of different pellets in my boiler...high quality pellets do burn better...are they worth the extra $$$...jury is out on that

Worth it to me! Less ash= less to maintain. Higher btu= more heat for less pellets.

I clean at least every two weeks anyway and my ash pan can hold minimum 35 bags worth of ash. I'd rather buy the cheaper stuff and get more BTUs per $.

I would pay a little more for a better pellet. How much more all depends on what we are comparing. If we are going from a box stove pellet (i know somersets can be had at lowes with some luck) like a GT and looking at my favorite turman then i will shell out the 40 additional bucks. Any more than that i would start thinking about it or not get as much and split it 50/50. Keep in mind though im in Pa and we rarely see single digits. Little further north or if i had more square footage or a less effecient house and i might consider it. If i didnt have a Harman i would also think hard about what i but in the hopper fearing it wouldnt like the fines or longer pellets. Theres a million variables but in general i would pay a little more for a better pellet.

Somersets are the best pellet around me and them being $175 a ton, sure helps a lot!!

As for igniting. Every ignition cycle is different. A little ash in the ignitor hole, more ash in the pot, etc..

Sometiems a pellet sits right on the ignitor and I get Zero Smoke. The next day (same pellet) the firebox may be so filled with smoke you cant see.

Pellets cant really be judged based on ignition. IMO. Its all about heat. Something that Somersets are Full of ;)

Being a HARMON owner...You could at least be close on the spelling of Somersets (Unless of course you are referring to a brand I am not aware of)!! LOL

Like a wise man once said..."never did think much of a man who could only spell a word one way" so whats the dig about my stove...I did spell it right didn't I? and BTW I was referring to something you are not aware of.

Hmmmm...Way too cryptic for my dumbass to understand my friend, unless you are reffering to summerthing I am not aware of!!

I haven't been convinced that spending $60 more for a higher end pellet is worth it. Anyone want to try?

Me either . I've burned everything from Tree Cycle local defunct company to Bare foot's Harman's eat what ever you put in the hopper and squeeze every F'n btu out possible only difference I see is in the ash, which effects cleaning, more ash may take a bit longer. bottom line for me is $240/ton is max for me which is Turmans in my area.
All the cash saved supports my other hobby see avatar;)

My local Hamer's dealer In Waldorf Md is asking $7 a bag. I burn $4.30 Pres-to-logs. I like the Hamer's, but at $7 a bag, I could burn moonshine cheaper.
Could 'ya send some up....I'll pay for the Hamer's!

I don't buy the best.... (275>)
I don't buy the worst....(<200)
somewhere in the 225-250 range is where I think you get the best burn for the buck. Of cours,e some brands don't follow this pricing so use it as a guide only.

Saw those the other day, Looks like a good price...Dealer??

Nah.. No dealer. Remember when I said we were going to Mantua? Because my Trailer wont hold 3 ton? They were $200 a ton over a month ago. Now he is down to $175. He had 3 ton. He may have sold some.

I'll take a ton and you take a ton. We split fuel, food, and beer (after the return home of course) ;)
