Anyone have a pic of a stove top temp thermometer with......

These can even be ordered as certified temp gauges for critical applications,,, why would you pay extra when you can get this gauge ready to go...enough said,,, sorry I even made the suggestion..........

Lol, take it easy. I will ask this again - does the PTC appear to be built similar to the Tel-Tru guage? There is a 'teardown' of the Tel-Tru in this thread but I don't see one of the PTC to make a comparison.

I will pay extra for quality. Another question - is the PTC that you have a 'certified temp guage' or would that not be one of the $45 dollar models?

The Tel-Tru (add the single Min/Max Needle) is $65.

Here is the link. I can't compare the two. But this one works very well. For the price, it better ;)

Under temp do 200°-750° and options, single min/max needle.

DUAL MAGNET THERMOMETERS Tel-Tru Dual Magnet Thermometers are designed for horizontal or ferrous non-horizontal surfaces. The bimetallic sensor is located in a draft shield and is in thermal contact with the surface to be measured.

The Woodstock thermometer only has a small pointer that comes up from the bottom but I think it should be able to push a paperclip.

Wow!! Never seen my PH top get anywhere near that? How the heck?

600! I don't even know how you did that. I've never gotten over the low 500s, and that's when I'm feeling brave a building a big fire. Must be some fire in that box to be 600?

Exactly! What the heck?

I'd like to see a comparison of these two thermometers as well. Which one is better?

The PTC for $46.98 (goes from 50 to 750, needle starts at top and goes clockwise, and we don't know what the back looks like?):

OR the Tel-Tru for $65.07 (goes from 50 to 750 degree's, needle starts at bottom and goes clockwise and has the qualities listed already):

No don't come certified,,, you can get a certified gauge sent for an additional fee but thats when these would be used in a situation where something has to be preheated before being welded and will be a structual member for something that could cause harm if it failed,,, so these gauges are not junk! Yes the spring is shielded, the gauge is in cased but at this point just go buy the other one, I'm not wasting my time here over a gauge,, really!;lol If anything I learned a good lesson today:cool:

You and Rideau have the shielded cooktop. This setup reduces the stone top temps quite a bit.

Charly, just because we don't all post doesn't mean we don't appreciate your information. It is good to know one can get a good thermometer at 25% lower cost. There are plenty of us where that makes a difference, so thank you for posting.

I figured that, that's a huge difference for just a little piece 10" x 8" x 1/16" of stainless sheetmetal. hmmmmm

Rideau,, your welcome,, was just trying to save someone some money...guess I should just be more of a reader and not so much a poster;)

Charly, thanks for info, I just might order the one you posted and save the $20. But we are looking for a comparison of the two. Cheaper isn't always better, or I'd be driving a Yugo! ;)

I've decided to just keep my thoughts to myself and let people make their own decisions as to what they want,,, after all it's their money..I wouldn't want to recommend something and then have people disappointed... Myself I'll just sit back and read the forums.....

Why is that? We want your opionion of which is better, and why, So we can make our own recommendation based on all the info presented. The defense rests, no further questions your honor! ;)

Anyway, that PTC gauge looks nice, just checked out their website. I like the idea of getting a Max and Min aux hand, now you can set them both to the current temp, go to bed and when you wake up you can see exactly what you pipe did temp wise. But they don't ever show the back of any of their gauges.... ?

EDIT: Now that you posted pics of the back, they look AWESOME! thanks... ordering one....

paper clip idea is pure genius. been thinking about how i can find out the max temp of the stove for a while now and you just solved it. THANKS!

Hehheh . . . I'm thinking . . . nope . . . I doubt anyone is still driving a Yugo these days . . . I suspect even the die-hard Yugo fans (all two of them) have long since sent their beloved Yugos to the scrap yard to be turned into woodstove thermometers. ;)

Thanks for the pictures.. That's gives me a better idea of what to expect. Not sure what all of the hostility is about???

Okay to stretch this thread to include probe thermometers suitable for double wall pipe?

Could anyone suggest one that records max temp like these surface units do?

How about a single wall pipe probe, with a max temp? I'm suprised there are not single wall pipe probes, only double wall pipe probes?

Condor probe can be used single or double wall...

I have one in package, it says in bold writing: "NOT to be used for single wall pipe". Something about the radiant heat of the surface affecting the readings.... ?

It had a probe on it? The one I got from woodstock is only a magnetic type....?

I ordered a probe thermometer from them. They sent me a condor that has instructions

fo r installation on either type of pipe. It has a spacer and a magnet on the back.
As I understand it, the device is influenced by the heat from the pipe. So it sounds like they calibrate it assuming double wall, but maybe with the proper spacer, it will work with single wall. It just doesn't sound very reliable to me. I'd rather find something that is less dependent on the pipe.

I'm trying to find one that is more independent of the surface of the pipe if possible. Somebody suggested one made for boilers but it didn't go high enough and didn't record max temp.

I'm beginning to think that an electronic thermometer or PID controller with the right thermocouple is the only way to do it right.

I do believe my paper clip has failed me 2 days in a row :(..... came home to the second day of the thing pegged right out at the max 800+. I'm thinking because I have it on the slant of the top plate that maybe once things get heated up and it starts to swing past say 700-725 that gravity takes over and it falls until it touches the slot.

Or....... that would explain why the house has been extremely warm when I get home from work after being gone for 12 hours. I think I'll move it to the flat area and try again.
