Bought a friend's father's Stihl 028 AV w/ 16"bar.
It had a couple easy years use, and had been sitting idle for a while. My friend recently had it dealer maintained.

Technically, I haven't bought/ started it yet. We shook hands on the deal. I took possession and will give it a workout this weekend before payment.

Are the Stihl oils (bar and mix) preferred, or can I substitute?

Thanks,
Gabe

You can substitute just fine. I use whatever cheap synthetic mix I can find and buy a cheap gallon of bar oil. For every guy on this forum you are about to get a different answer for bar oil.

p.s. 028 is just about the greatest saw ever. I may be biased on that.

Great saw. Keep a good 50:1 mix in it for fuel, tractor supply sells bar oil for $9-11 a gallon unless you have a strong preference for something else, then by all means, have at it.

Thanks gents. I expect the trial will go well this weekend.
Then I'll have to take a cool saw-over-the-shoulder pic for my avatar;)

Great little saw there. As for the oil, I'd substitute it for another as already mentioned.....you're paying for a name on that stuff...

Really? I can get it for $5.99 at my local store. I believe that is the regular price. I think the Husq brand is $11.99, but I don't see how it is $5 better than the store brand stuff.

Have never seen it that low here. Not recently anyways. And certainly not @ regular price.

i was thinking it was about 8 bucks for the poulan brand stuff at wal-mart. been a while since I bought it, though.

Bar oil for me is canola oil. I usually get it free from the grocery store my wife works at.

Here, I could get TSC B&C oil for 4.99 on sale three years ago, and fortunately I stocked up then. The past 6 months or so its sale price had been $7. Since the first of the year, the sale price has been $8.

Yeah, a gallon of chainsaw oil runs about $8 here for the Ace Hardware brand or other house brand at Home Depot and Lowes and Stihl runs $12 a gallon.

Wow, thought I had an epiphany, but after further research it appears that $8 for a gallon of bar oil is pretty cheap. Used to use house brand motor oil from the auto parts store about 20 years ago, but man that stuff has gotten really expensive. $3.99 for house brand Advance Auto Parts oil, which is $16 a gallon. Makes the differene between it and Mobil 1 synthetic seem a lot smaller now.

Congrats on the purchase.. Any pics of this 028?

That's one saw I would like to have in my Stable. Would much rather prefer the 028 WB over the 029.

Looking forward to your work ;)

Nice saw!

I also just picked up a "new to me" Stihl 026 saw today. Now I need to go load up on some saw oils.

And I'm looking forward to cleaning up my yard! Irene left me a hanger oak that clobbered one of my woodpiles. I had a professional service take it and another tree down. They do a real good job, but fall short when it comes to bucking to the size my stove likes. Consequently, there are a lot of rounds around from Irene, and from trees we removed when we had a driveway put in. Add to that some 5' logs I found buried at my uncle's place (he forgot I have a stove). All that is in the way of my fallen stack.

1/4 acre properties are fun. Its like musical chairs.

I'll post a pic once I've confirmed that its in good working order. This will be a nice upgrade from that Remington electric I've been using.

Gave the saw a quick test this afternoon. You could tell it hadn't been run in a long while. It was real stiff at first and took a while to start. After a warm up it ran like a champ but the chain was only putting out dust instead of chips. I'm keeping the saw but I'll also be picking up a new chain and a set of files.

Pic after I clean it up a bit.

Any pics yet??

I just won an auction on fleaBay, for a Mint 028AV... Looks almost brand new. After my bid, the activity stopped. 4 days later, I won it :)

Literally looks brand new. Hoping it runs that way!!

Be interesting to see what you think of the 028 vs the MS260 Dex.

Of course, if there are no pictures, you never owned an 028. ;)
