Hi guys,

I found this ad on CL. Looks to be two very clean Stihl's - a MS250 and 028 (w/ 20" bar). Comes with case(s), extra chains. etc. Guy told me he'd let it all go for $400. I buddy of mine wants a saw, so thought we'd each grab one. I really want the 028, but I have other good saws, so might need to take the MS250. I have an 025, so might sell and upgrade to the newer MS250 (or keep both ;)). Hoping he will let me take the 028. So.....if this happens, I'm thinking whoever gets the 028 pays $250, and whoever gets the 025 gets it for $150. Does that sound fair?

Cheers!

Why are you posting this here? So someone can grab it out from under you? If I was in NE I would. I would keep the 028 and flip the 250 for about... $250.

Do not pass GO, go directly to BUY SAWS!

Too late! I bet they are already *gone*. Or the seller will get tons and calls, wise up and increase the price.

That happened on an 440 that I called on here about a month ago. Guy wanted $200 in the ad... then he wanted $450 because I was the 5th caller in 20 minutes.

Okay! So.......I'll ask that no one beat me to it - be kind friends! Hopefully still available - I'll try to grab ASAP.

Cheers!

Its not us. I can see the CL Stihl wolf eyes blinking and hear them snarling from 3,000 miles away!

Though I do have an ex-SIL in south VT that I could call and ask a favor... eyes glinting, claws extending, teeth bearing...

Ha! I'm one of them - I'm on almost every day looking for the sweet deal. I'll post if I get them - he was good to go late last night for a Friday meet up. Damn - now I'm worried they might slip through my fingers......! Keep your ex-SIL and ex!

Cheers!

You are not seriously going to wait until Friday? They would have been gone here in OR about 20 minutes. Seriously. I called on a 310 the other day for $150 that was posted near me 30 minutes after it posted, and it was already SOLD! I got my 044 out from under another sale. The guy said someone was going to look at it in 2 hours, but it could be mine if I got there earlier. I got there in less than a hour. I got the saw... a dandy too. 3/4 wrap R model, logger took care of it, needed cash to pay his bills. One of my best deals on CL.

Damn! No choice my friend - wife has a hospital visit tomorrow afternoon and I have to watch the kids. Wait, the kids can come for a drive! I'll e-mail him now! Cheers!

Hey Stihlhead - what do you think of the 039 compared to the 028. I have an 039 that I like (20" bar), but if I had the 028 with 20" bar, is the 039 worth keeping, or sell to offset the cost? Cheers!

The 028 is a good saw but variable on HP depending on the model (there were 3 different ones). My guess from the sticker on the side is that it is a WoodBoss model, which has 3.2 HP. The 028AV has 3.5 HP. The 028 Super has 3.8 HP. The MS280 has 3.6 HP. None of those is going to match your 039 in power, which is over 4.3 HP. The 028 with 3.2 HP has the same power as a 260, and likely would run better with an 18 inch bar. The larger 028s would run a 20 inch bar OK. I ran a 20 inch on my 290 all the time, and that saw had 3.8 HP stock, and about 4.2 HP with a modified muffler.

So it depends on which 028 it is. A Super would run a 20 inch bar no problem, but a WoodBoss?? I would also modify the muffler though. Though people run 026/260s here with 20 inch bars all the time and they only have 3.2 HP. I tend to run my 026s with 16-18 inch bars. I would run the 039 with a 25 inch bar. I run mostly 25s on my 361s, and a 20 on my 310.

That thar 028 with a brand new bar looks mighty tasty. And that thar all but new 250 is looking real nice as a side dish as well. Plump for pouncing on. Take cash, offer him $375 in green bills, pay $400 if he holds out. The saws alone are well worth it. The extra B&C and cases/scabbards are all gravy. The Stihl Wolf in me is getting antsy. Is it a full moon?

I would think you would still want to keep that 039 around for something serious, at least as long as your finances allowed. The day will come that you'll face something really big with that 028, and you'll wish you still had the 039.

Sounds great guys - thanks. I'll keep the 039 - it's seen little use and I really like it - don't need to sell, just have a wife that doesn't like all of my saws - these two will make seven I think.........but who's counting! Cheers!

Wife does not like saws? Sad to hear that. My ex was good about saws. Whenever I bought another one, she gave me a big kiss. She understood that saws = firewood, and saws = trees managed on the 100+ acre property. She was always bugging me to fall more trees and get more firewood.

You can also think of them as gold bars, easily swapped for cash, any day of the week on CL. Even the stock market is closed on weekends and holidays.

An 028 Wood Boss came up on CL here today for $150, but looking it over I passed. It is a beater. Broken starter, broken back handle, chips in the wrong places, carb was funny, the $150 is all its money. It would be fun to mod one to see what power I can get out of one though.

Wife likes saws and firewood a whole lot - just thinks I have enough saws and equipment to do all the work that needs doing - and she's right! I do agree though - buying good quality saws is never a bad thing - always able to sell pretty quick. I just finished a phone conversation with the seller - he's still good to go. At this point, a buddy and I are going to split the deal - I'm waiting to see which saw he wants (I'm hoping to get the 028!). It is a two hour drive to the saws and my buddy has family in the same area - so, I'm passing on making the trip myself and hoping the he can pick them up on Friday. If I get 'em, I'll post some pics! Thanks for your comments! Cheers!
