A few Ash giving me a hard time.

I use to have a 3/4 ton J20 pickup with a winch on the front that I use to pull these right down with. I took basic physics in college. I use to have a prof. Who would say "That's a lot of stuff working against this stuff over here. I liked that guy. LOL. Thanks for the safety reminder. The big one is cut up from the base up to about 8" diameter. Along with the bottoms of some of the others. So the big pressure and "stuff" is now gone. I'm sitting in my truck taking a break now. Ran out of gas, me and the saw.

Best time to quit.
Tired means slower reactions. Falls, slips and missteps lead to accidents. I'm up to a max of a tank and half of fuel in the saw. One tank if I'm limbing and twitching at the same time. Better to live to fight another day.

Dam straight. I work through one tank when there is a lot of snow on the ground. Then it is break time. I will be going back in in about five minutes. That's about a half hour break. I will take my time, that is what is nice about a day off and already having eight cord ready for next year. No big rush. I never work too fast in this woods. The trees are too close together and it can be dangerous. That is what is important, recognizing the danger and taking appropriate precautions.

Invest in a Come Along if you can't get a winch back in there. Hook it on a tree and and see if you can't ratchet the base of that tree backwards. I've pulled a several thousand pound car up a bank and out of a mudhole before. No reason why it wouldn't work for a tree. Just make sure you get one with substantial weigh allowance. Good thing to have anyway...you can tension a tree with one.
That come along idea would work well, no doubt. But I can usually wrap a chain around it and pull it down with my tractor now. But the snow is keeping me from bringing the tractor down the hill with no chains on the back tires yet. But, it's all good. The major part is cut up, still a good bit of wood leaning though. That will be for another day. I had to get cleaned up and get a few other things done before kids get out of school. Here are some more pics. Getting to be a good amount of wood already. It is still kind of a mess hung up in there, but I have the heaviest part of the trees off now, so the most pressure on all that "stuff" is gone. By the time I get back to it I will probably be able to get in there with the tractor. If a bunch of this snow melts away. If not, it will still be there when I can get to it.

Possibly. I am happy with what I got done today in 3 hours. But it is suppose to be nice and warm here through the next four days. Hopefully it will melt enough snow, and then go back to cold to keep the ground frozen. Then I could drive the truck right down there and load it right up. We have had some good melt already yesterday and it is 38
and sunny right now. I am liking it, the snow and ice is coming right off my metal roof. It should be all gone of the high roof by the end of the day I would think.Oh. I like working in the winter time. No bugs, no heat. Nice.

I went in there thinking I was going to cut one good size Ash. It turned into about 5 Ash and two Pine to get them to the ground.
I had a chance to get back in the woods for 1 hour after the wife got home from work. Cut some more of them up. It is going to be a good amount of wood once they are all cut up. But now I will not be able to get back in there until next week probably. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for the next two weeks and not drop a bunch of snow on us.ZAP, I only want to hear about good weather reports for the next two weeks. Got it.

Look for some Artic weather which might (will) give us Lake effect snow. Just an old fashion winter up Northern NY. Maybe some black ice tomorrow morning.I went in there thinking I was going to cut one good size Ash. It turned into about 5 Ash and two Pine to get them to the ground.

I'm enjoying the time off with some cross country skiing.

Nice work Gasifier. Make sure you enjoy this weekend because Mother Nature will be testing us with the big wave of artic air, coming in waves,each wave colder than the last.

Nice work Gasifier, but it would bother me to leave the job unfinished due to weather. Hope it holds out for you and you can get the mess cleaned up as if nothing happened.

Pretty obvious but for me sometimes left or right works better than straight back when pulling one down. Not a physics guy, not the smartest guy, and not the wealthiest fella but I do have a lot of McGyver in me Typically on hang ups you can only go straight back do to tight quarters but in this situation it looks like there is a lot of room to hook up to that one with a chain/pulling strap and tug sideways. Just an idea. I have 3 very large ash out back that I continue to study, research, look at and theorize the method of removal. Mostly because I want them to fall w/o destroying other trees so there will be ropes, and truck/tractor involved and a bigger saw than is at my imediate disposal. Fortunately my friend just picked up an 056 magnum II with a 36" bar. Monster saw and more than I am comfortable running but this will be in the mix when the big boys come down.

Went in today and finished cutting these trees up and threw all the wood into two piles. Forgot to take a pic so I guess it didn't happen though. 
Probably forgot to take one because it was so dam cold. While working I was plenty warm enough, but while tinkering with the saw on the tailgate of the truck the wind was blowing and holy snykies! (Did I spell that right?) It was 12 according to the truck with a wind oh probably 10 mph I guess. It did not take long for my fingers to get cold. Suppose to go down to -5 to -15 here tonight. I will get some pics of the piles and new work I am going in to do tomorrow. A good work out and not a bug in site. I wonder where they all are? Love it. Hopefully get me 2-4 more piles cut in the next two days. I am guestimating, but I think I have about 2-1/2 cord downed, bucked, and thrown into a pile right now. It would be nice to get 8 cord c/s/s at the house before the bugs return. That on top of what I already have c/s/s would be sweet. I am sitting with about 6 cord c/s/s for next season right now. Need to get to 10.

That's a good idea Dennis. I went back to the truck after I changed the blade on the saw for a newly sharpened one. Warmed the hands back up before I went to cutting. Now they are finally down, and one more tall,straight one that was about 14" across the base. That newly sharpened chain went through that Ash like butter.
