That is an excellent video to watch. Well worth the hour it runs. Gather the family 'round.

Heed Hittin'Steel's advice regarding the chaps and other PPE. See the guy in the photo? He's dressed to party. ;)

Dude in the pic oughta put his earmuffs over his ears.:p A C

So, what's most important, the protective top or pants (if you're not going to have both)?

The helmet, safety glasses, and ear protection is all self evident, but what is the purpose of the face shield thing? Is that to protect your face against debris, possible kickback, or both?

Where is a good place to buy all this stuff? Online or locally?

Thanks.

I'd definitely want the chaps. I bought mine from labonville online. Sizing can be tricky, buy a size or 2 longer than you think you need or else they will look like womens capri pants lol

Face shield is for BOTH - My friends think of me as "safety man" because I always wear my gear when using power tools. I may work at the forge with bare hands when making knives but will have ear and eye protection on.

Chainsaws are completely unforgiving and the expense of chaps and quality helmet are a small price to pay IMO.

Regarding the 100$ one time used Husky Rancher I think you are dealing with a "too good to be true" deal. Happens a lot on CL and you have to be careful. When I was shopping for my quad I would find unbelievable deals on new bikes and side by sides that turned out to be the, "send me money as I am out of the country right now and I will arrange to have the bike delivered" type of thing. SCAMS are out there - be careful. If you cannot go meet the person and exchange the lettuce for the item don't do the deal. Probably pretty obvious but after working in banking/finance and seeing the foolish things people do to get a good deal amazed me. Sometimes the actions of people are almost as unbelievable as the original deal.

Sounds like you have the saw you wanted - congrats and be safe.

You can't see the plugs or glasses in that pic. Muffs don't play nice with my yellow glasses, only the Stihl Blackwidow sunglasses.

I figured, just given ya a little chit. A C

Woodchips and branches have a nasty habit of getting around/under safety glasses. The face shield covers far more area.

I agree with HittinSteel on the Labonville Chaps. Made in the USA, high quality product. It seems like a lot of cash, especially since its half the cost of your saw. But its really not once you think about the cost of one emergency room visit and then the lost time from work.

You might be able to find some of the gear locally. I know that the tractor supply near me carries Husky, and they have the combo helmet. Any of the saw shops will also have chaps and gear. Baileys online has a lot of their own stuff as well.

If you dont know your local Sthil dealer, go pay him a visit. Try to find one thats been in business a while, chances will be better that they will have parts for your 028. Some of the newer shops around me just carry new equipment, have to order all the old parts. The guy who has been in business for 30+ years knew what I needed before I asked him :) At any rate, its a good excuse to go buy some mix, maybe some bar oil, and get to know the guy. See what they have for safety gear, and maybe you can get a package deal on chaps/helmet/etc.

Thanks gentlemen. I looked into my local Stihl dealer, apparently the hardware store in the center of town is a dealer. I've never been into their power equipment section, so I'm not sure what I'll find, but I'll check 'em out.

I will surely get gloves, chaps, and the helmet. Good cash, but I've already been in an ambulance once this year (motorcycle race) and prefer to avoid any more trips at all costs. Plus, it'll help put my mind at ease a little while sawing. Once I get good enough with the equipment, I can start scrounging a bit. I think my neighbor may be interested in teaming up for some scrounges. Sounds like a hoot.
