Been wanting to try them myself but also know that my stove will do just fine with the mwp blend at the lowest of temperatures so I'll hold onto the softies for next year.

I actually tried a bag of barefoots.... I think for the price (5.50 a bag) the Adirondack hardwood that TSC has and the cheap stove chow is fine... equal ash/heat.

About all I can get in my area (from what I've found) are Stove Chow, Energex, and a few shoddier brands than those. Although I don't consider Stove Chow and Energex (They are the same thing I understand) that cheap, they are both very ashy and give off a good amount of heat. Would love to get some of the pellets you boys up in New England get.

If anyone in the State College, PA area know of other brands around, I'd love to listen to ya!!!

no such thing as shoulder pellets when you own a Harman....................
My point exactly. It is amazing how many Harman owners spend extra money on high end pellets without understanding how their stove truly works.

Have you checked Agway? The 3 stores near me have a pretty good selection.

WHAT?!? I'd love to get my hands on a few bags of each of those. Any idea on what stores/shops have those around me? The box stores and the 2 or 3 dealers I know of around here don't have those. Days like this I hope I'm dead wrong!!! ==c

damn! only got to about 10 below.
where the frack is winter?

so i put the softies in last night without cleaning the stove.
i can definitely tell though there is much less fly ash.
that's nice. won't argue that.

So are you guys saying that a colder pellet throws out the same heat as a hotter pellet in a Harman?
I get how the stove works but I am not making the connection. I was thinking when it comes to sg/ft, some may need the extra BTU?

I think they are saying the stove automatically sets the feed and air to get to temperature regardless of pellet, whereas I need to walk over to my Quad and change a switch to High and maybe adjust a feed rate trim.

You'll still need to burn more pellets and get more ash to get the same heat from lower-quality pellets, regardless of stove. And yes, when you reach the max safe feed rate of the stove, you'll see a difference if one pellet has a higher net BTU/lb than another.

i know exactly how the harman works, but your gonna burn more pellets with a "shoulder" season pellet than you are with a "name brand" such as turmans or barefoots on the same stove setting, and your stove wont be caked with ash like some "shoulders" only seem to be good for doing....to each his own theory i guess

Ya that's what I was thinking too. It will control the burn up to a point but the feed rate on a Harman is not infinite. So someone with a bigger house may benefit from the extra BTU.

Take a closer look at the btus/$ comparison. I clean my stove at least every other whether it needs it our not so the ash doesn't bother me. I'd rather save my money. After all isn't that what most of us are burning pellets for anyway?

I've often wondered that myself.

You are correct. But how do you measure that? And if I ever need to hit the max feed rate, it's time to move south.

Looks like we'll be heading back to the cold stuff Sunday night. I'll be switching back to my cubies and the 4 bags of turmans that were hiden in my stash. That was like finding treasure!

Cold snap looks like it will last a solid week of mid 20's for daytime highs. Saw a few low single digit night time temps in the forcast. Brrrrrr! :(

Me too. Looks like 20's here from Sunday night until Thurs, in the teens each night. Then looks like back to 30's.

Really can't complain to much. So far winters been pretty mild, Just rough on the shouder pellet stash. Gonna need more Timber Heats or PTL real soon.

BTW, I like them Timber Heats, Burn a lot like the Dry Creek's of old. Not really a shoulder pellet IMHO either.
