I burn a lot of Black Walnut. I think it is pretty good firewood and I still go after it even though I am way ahead on scrounging.

Dennis,

The insulation is definitely making a difference, the house holds the heat better and is more comfortable.

I'm just surprised at the walnut...

I'll put a couple of Cherry splits on the front/top of a load, and it puts off floating flames for a couple hours. I like it.
Never burned Walnut and, based on these responses, probably never will. ;lol

Interesting. I've got a lot of mixed hardwood that I bought last year and am still burning along with some ash I cut myself. Every now and again I get these extraordinary dancing flames that are rather hypnotic. I've always wondered what I was doing differently so I could reproduce it with greater frequency.

I have burned black walnut in both a "ceramic" owb and a gasifier and found it to be a little better or the same as black cherry. Walnut was my primary wood for almost 4 years. Black walnut likes to hold moisture though and has to be stored off the ground and stacked in the sun once split. Left on the ground it seems to hold water indefinitely.

Thanks for the advice. A buddy of my hubby dumped 2 pick up loads here he css'd last fall but his wife hates the smell so to my yard it came! While we have to split/cut most of it again for our little firebox (grrrr) it smells awesome just handling it so I'm sure it will smell even better burning. It's covered in snow right now but at least I know our time frame to use it well.

just put up a cord of black walnut. Seemed pretty heavy when I c/s/s.......

It has unusually high amounts of ash. I would choose silver maple over it any day, dries quicker with the same heat but half the ash.

I've burned it before but no longer go out of my way for it.(have actually passed some recently) Personally I feel cherry and soft maple(silver/red) perform way better for me. My biggest complaint is all the ash that is left behind.

Where is my latch? ;lol
Lots of ash....Your not kidding!

I work in the firearms industry and as you may have seen on the news....... things are a bit crazy at the moment but I will get you one.....

The walnut I get around here is great for me , but not everyone has as much insolation as I do in the walls, attic and floors. I burn a lot of maple and walnut and it keeps the house very warm, 74+ .

Walnut has to be dry, Like 3 years oak dry. Then it burns like cherry;)
