Beater 460 Restoration

I finished putting together my restored 460 last night. As some might remember, I originally traded old ammo for this saw when it was advertised on CL as a 440 (without an ID plate). I have a "new" 440, so I figured it would make a good beater/future parts saw for mine. It was in very sad shape on the outside, with a crack in the handle, but it ran like a champ so I traded for it. When checking parts # for an item or two, that's when I suspected it might be a 460 instead, and a serial # check via the dealer confirmed it.

I was going to just slap a fiberglass patch on the handle and leave it as is, a good cheap beater 460. New handle/tank assemblies on ebay were running $120-160. I figured that I would keep my eye out for a nice used one. Then one day I spy brand new ones for $88 buy it now........ sold! As the remainder of the saw was all scratched up with much of the paint gone, it just was not going to look right sitting in that brand new handle.......... so I bought a can of Stihl OEM paint. I completely tore it down inspecting the piston and cylinder too. They looked fantastic. I picked up a very nice used top cover, a new ID tag, and an HD2 air filter and "like new cover". I cleaned everything up, painted the metal on the case, and put it all back together........... thank goodness there were no parts left over when I was done!

I only wish I had taken a complete "before photo" to compare it with. I did still have the beat cracked handle so I photographed the saw with the old handle next to it......... quite a change. I figure to only use this saw the rest of this year cleaning up after my "big" 120 tree timber job last May, then sell/trade it. All of my really big trees are down now to where my 440 and 360 can easily handle anything left. I'll just use the 460 with my 28" bar to take down a number of big stumps that are higher than I want, and cut up several big double trunk butt pieces that are left. About all I'm going to do more with it is a new duel port muffler.

Man, what a change. I remember seeing that saw on CL. I would have jumped, but hindsight is 20/20.

I have my MS460 down to a crankcase on the bench right now, hopefully it will be back together before too long.

Boog, did you split the case on that saw? I have a spanky new bottom end for mine and I think I will be splitting the case to get it installed. Waiting for my tools to get here (ouch, they are damned expensive but this isn't the only saw I'm considering splitting either. )

Looks like an aftermarket starter on that saw too. How do you like that beast with no Elastostart handle? Every saw I own and intend to keep beyond initial testing gets an elastostart, just because it makes that big a difference for me. Especially when cold saws can take 6-9 yanks to get 'em going in 20 degree weather.

Any particular reason you decided to not repaint the handlebar black? Would finish off that saw quite nicely.

I need new top covers for mine too but there seems to be a shortage of like new plastics for MS460's on eBay. Boog.

No, I didn't split the case. It seemed to run nice and the piston and cylinder looked very nice so I didn't fool with it "mechanically" for now. Freakingstang offered to touch up the ports if I want, but for now I just figured to put a new duel port muffler on it, I can always fool with it later. This was just really a "cosmetic" restoration for now.

Yeah, that replacement starter handle was on it, just kept it for now, could also replace that too later for a nicer pull, its actually not too bad, but does not fit right at the base. Modified it a little with a utility knife, it fits better now.

I was waiting to order some handlebar hose and I figured to just wait till then, the old hose on it is pretty scratched up and I need to get some for the 4 x 031AVs I'm getting ready to paint/sell anyway. It sells by the foot on ebay pretty cheap. I did reinstall it with with "Boog's custom duel layer antivibration interface mounts" between the handle and saw...................custom cut from an old athletic shoe insole.............. you can just see a touch of yellow peeking out in that bottom photo. I had some on there before and actually think it made a slight improvement dampening transferred vibration from the saw body.

It could really use a new handle guard too, it is pretty scratched up and is missing a chunk out of it in the one corner, can't really see it in the photos.

I lucked out on the covers, I was watching ebay since October when I first got that saw. The air filter cover showed up first combined with a new HD2 filter, then just recently the top cover showed up. My air cover was all cracked up in about 8 places, kept the knob and tossed the rest. My old top cover (without a tag) cleaned up better than I thought although it has a small cracked corner, it is up on ebay now with 5 watchers ending tomorrow night. I had ordered a new ID tag for it long ago, so I removed the tag from the used top cover I bought, put the new one in it, and put that used tag on ebay with my old cover.

You have to constantly keep checking ebay. I've been looking for one more 031AV electronic flywheel for the 4th saw I'm fixing up for weeks now. There must be 30 used "points" ones there for sale (including one of mine lowest priced). Finally another popped up as "buy it now" for $22 (shipped) yesterday and I grabbed it! It helps to be retired and able to check ebay & CL every morning/noon/night for the items you want.

Yeah, I know, I am selling some now though, sold 1 and have 4 more up for sale. But I think you're on to something here AC............you gave me an idea with that new laptop of yours and that rocking chair comment. I just think I'm going to move that rocker right out in front of the workbench, get myself that Stihl/Husky application like Dex has on his smartphone. I'll never even have to come in the house to check the computer, I'll just get immediate notification every time something I want comes available. I can just hang out there, working on saws, reloading, napping in my rocker, sniping the best deals as they first pop up. Ahh, live is good!

Because the electronic ones are mega expensive and junk. If you get a points flywheel and coilpack, you can buy the 20 dollar ignition chip to replace the points and have a very, very reliable ignition in your saw. I think the same goes for the 031. You are almost better off buying all points components and replacing the whole electronic setup, then replace the points with the chip.....VOILLA!

Already did this to my other two 041 Supers, and they run like ***** apes....

I'm confused a little here, and not familiar with the original electronic components of the 041AV. I'm working on points/condenser/coil based 031AV. Usually, the points or condenser are bad, and replacements are unavailable or very expensive. I'm keeping the coil, and replacing the points and condenser with the electronic chip. That makes them runs pretty good. But they will run even better with the old "points" flywheel replaced with the "electronic" flywheel, its a timing issue difference between the two flywheels, where the "chip" runs better with the electronic flywheel.

Thanks AC, but I'm just getting by on these retirement finances. I actually would not have retired this early but got laid off from my original decent state job 2.5 years short of minimum retirement age. After working another 2.5 years for peanuts on the Turnpike managing two of the Plazas to get my 30 years in with the state, I took my "30 and out" to move on with my life. If I hadn't gotten laid off, I'd probably still be doing "the safety guy" routine at my old place now. I'm a much happier, but poorer, man today the way things worked out.

Do we have any good hackers on this forum? Maybe we can intercept Boog's CL and ebay search results and filter them to exclude Stihl, Husqvarna, Dolmar etc. and pass through Craftsman and Poulan.
