I have a rear vented Hearthstone stove that has a very low hearth to flue center distance - about 21 inches. I would like to buy a Jotul stove that would require me to increase that distance to about 5 more inches. I have a Class A chimney that runs up 30' within an outside chase, which is 5 sections of 6' chimney pipe.

Is there anyway I can change out one of the sections to allow me to raise the connector thimble by 6 inches or would I have to replace a 6' with a 5' and have the increase be 12 inches? That would be too much of a vertical offset for the stove.

Some companies have 6" pieces or some make telescoping sections, that would be best in your case i would think. It adjusts right to where you want it.

Is it true that you must stay with the same company when adding pipe sections as opposed to mix and match?
Most companies say in the manual it is only UL listed using the same manufacturers piping. Many companies also have different ways of connecting the pipes together. for example some twist lock onto each other, others just slide over and screw together. So there may be some companies that will fit each other, but I have never tried mixing and matching.

Can you raise the entire chimney to the desired height or would that be nearly impossible? Some chases are large enough to crawl into and work. Maybe this wont work in your case, but its another idea.

That's a good point about raising the chimney. I think if I put my contractor on the treadmill for about a week, he could squeeze in. I'll check with him to see if that is a possibility. Otherwise it might be just as easy to replace the first 6 foot section with a 5 foot section and raise the stove up a bit with a pre-fab pedestal hearth pad.
