I have one and like it. Don't seem to make it anymore. Another similar I've seen has a flip up cover which doesn't seem practical to fit in a stove's opening.

Any leads on the original?

edit: Actually, I don't think so. Same problem with clearance with opened lid in stove. Maybe.

I thought the high profile handle would interfere with getting it in and out of the stove, etc.

The Ash Dragon is less than 6" high when fully opened and the rearward mounted handle allows easy reach into the stove. When open, the lid overhangs the leading edge of the scoop by less than 1/2". I use it in my Hampton insert that has an 8" high opening with no problem.

Well, believe it or not the Ashtrap just broke! The cover kind of stuck and then jumped the tracks while in the stove. Luckily, no embers were misplaced in the trip out the door. I believe I will be getting the 22" expensive stainless Ash Scoop. The Ashtrap gave off that burning paint stink when there hot coals were involved
 
I love the Ash Trap that I have used for the last 4 years. At one point the cover was sticking. I found that at some point I must have dinged the front corner & the front corner was bent. Straightened it out & it has been fine since.

I loved it too...until yesterday. :)
It stuck too in the past and I made some adjustments and it was working pretty smoothly. Yesterday, though, the cover stuck with a bunch of ash and hot coals in it, and I was trying to jiggle it (not violently) to get it to close, and that's when the cover came off the tracks. Maybe it was the heat, I don't know, but then I was left with a coverless pan that I managed to carry out the door without spilling any coals. When carrying that thing through the house, I would not rely totally on that little metal handle, for sure.
 
I have a small metal garbage can that I use for the ashes. I dot think I'd trust myself not to trip going up the stairs without a lid. Cold ashes can go in a 5g bucket, but be sure they're cold!

I have to go to hd today, I've seen them for sale there. I'll get a price for reference.

Yeah, but you dump the dustpan into a pail that's next to the stove and then you cover it up, right? I've found that no matter how slow I am, and no matter how careful to try to cover it up, it becomes a dusty process. These scoops that I'm talking about have a cover of one type or other that closes while in the stove-most all ash kicked up goes up the flue or stays in the firebox.
For whatever reason, I have two of those metal dust pans-one large and one small.
 
Tip the pail a bit and it will fall in without the mess. It's kind of like filling a cup of soda at Burger King or a solo cup from a keg. A 6 gallon pail with locking lid is $16 at HD.

I have one, and tried that. I kept coming back to the Ashtrap.

I just looked at the Ashtrap before I threw it out. It looked like the lid was or had been bent at one spot. I think it was because I tried to open it as much as I could and it might have been bent by the roof of the insert. Still doesn't explain why the cover totally popped off. I still like my heat causing binding and then design, so that it fell off the rails...theory.
 
Well, I used the new Ash Scoop while the outside temps were balmy. Worked quite well. Big capacity. I emptied it into an ash can outside.20130130_171007.jpg
 
I don't know; I'll look tonight. There's not much stress on it though. Interesting thing is the cover protrudes on the bottom so the unit won't lie flat without opening the cover.

Edit: The good thing about the stainless is that it didn't give off any paint stink from the heat.
