A friend of mine just bought a house with his stove in it. He has never had a stove before, so he is going through the learning curve of operating it.
 
It's a very good stove. He should start with both air controls open, then closing off the lower (primary) air as the fire gets going and reducing the upper control as the wood goes to the coaling stage. In rough terms the lower air controls the primary and the upper controls the secondary over the baffle.
