We need a new vacuum. Our old one lasted about eight years old. We don't mind spending a littles extra for a quality item. Does anyone gave any suggestions. TIA!

Believe it or not I'm pretty happy with the Sears brand one we bought a few years back . . . I forget who the true manufacturer is . . . went with a canister.

We are open to all types. We have a Eureka Boss (a bag model) now and have been pretty happy with it but I don't think they make it any longer.

I got it at Sears a few years back but it's great. We have 2 jack russels that shed enough to make a whole other dog sometimes. I have all hard wood floors and stairs so there always seems to be dust and dog hair everywhere. They make other models depending on what your looking for but check them out. We have a $500 Dyson the cleaning crew uses at work, I still prefer mine

We have a Kirby gen 3 I bought off craigslist five years ago for $50. Put a new brush and belt on it, and it's pretty amazing. The first time I used it, I could actually see the clean trail thru the carpet. It sucks the carpet up a bit off the pad. Showed just how bad of a job the old Oreck was doing.

We just replaced a 5 year old vacuum with a Hoover Windtunnel T series from Costco for ~$80 and it's a big improvement over the 8-10 year old vacuum we had. It's bagless and has a washable filter which is nice.

If you don't need any attachments it's hard to get much better one of these. They work well bags are cheap and literally every part can be replaced on them.

If you want attachments go with a canister or backpack style, I'd go with a Pro-Team backpack myself.

IMO if you're going to spend hundreds you may as well get a long lasting vacuum with easily replaceable parts both Sanitare and Pro-Team have been used commercially for years and will last. Dyson and the like may look fancy but if it breaks in 2 years and you can't fix it how well was the money spent.

We have had several, but overall, I am best pleased with the Dyson.
It is powerful. If anything gets stuck, you can take it apart without tools and get the obstruction. My wife likes to pick up the floor wit the vac. I am always getting socks, laundry softener paper, pencils etc. caught up. No bags, is a bit heavy, but nothing I have used compares to the suction and ease of use.

I've spent a lot of time looking at vacuums. We had a lot of them and haven't been impressed by many. We look for quality of construction and performance. Many perform well but don't hold up. The plastics used are prone to fractures. I've found that things like separate motors that drive the beater brush by cogged or ribbed belt make a major difference.
Check out the Sanitaire commercial series. We'd have one but don't want a bagged unit. With three dogs and a cat bags get expensive.
After watching the cleaning staff at my wife's school we actually bought a backpack model like the Hoover C2401-101 for our hardwood floors and stairs and love it.

i'm not an expert, but my wife's dyson dc33 has been good, and she loves it. i've used it a handful of times and it seems to do the job well. we have cats and a dog (large) and it seems to work fine. my wife isn't exactly delicate with things, and it has held up, so it gets a thumbs up from me. you can get them for less by getting refurbished too.

We got the Dyson DC39 Animal about 4 months ago and have been very pleased. It is powerful but compact and light and the tools work very well. You will actually see how well it works the first time you use it on your carpets. The engineers were on their game when they designed this vacuum.

I bought a Eureka at Wallyworld about a year ago. I always do extensive research on anything over $100 before buying. The one I got is actually the model just before this one. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Eureka-SuctionSeal-Bagless-Upright-Vacuum-AS1101A/19498082 As you can see in the link, it is bagless and has more suction than a Dyson or most competitors. We don't have a problem with it leaking any dust out and never have to change the bag. I used to sell Kirby vacuums over 20 yrs ago and would rather have this Eureka. It is cheaper than the high name models and performs better. Trust me...this thing SUCKS, which is a good thing.

A consumer report I read a while back supports your finding. $ per $, that is the best buy.
My like for the Dyson comes from the the fact that it does a very good job and is the easiest vac on the market that I know that you can take apart anywhere to get at an obstruction. As I mentioned, my wife will try to vac any thing up rather than sweep or pick it up. Happens hundreds of times. She won't change so the option of a vac that allow quick take apart has been the answer for me. no more burned out belts, and no tools needed.

Thanks for everyone's input. We are going to install a central vac system in a few years. We just bought the house about six months ago and still have a list of other items to pay for….

Vacuum for what exactly?

Shop vac? Carpet vac? Bare floors?

I'm not a big fan of central vacs, but my Mom likes the one she has. I just think it's a PITA to drag a hose all over the place.
I use a $200ish Costco vac for the carpets in the bedrooms and a broom for the rest of the house (laminate). Also have a Roomba that helps out. Would have to sweep every few days otherwise.

Same here. We have had several brands. Eventually parts are hard to get or the original design is flawed. We now have a Miele. It's powerful, lightweight, quiet and sucks like a bandit.

Looks like the Miele is made in Germany and sells for$300 to $1200.00 with $500 and up for one with decent features.
Only have capets left in the bedrooms. Those will be gone one by one as soon as I can arrange to get it done. Replacement flooring is the thick laminate flooring. Easy care and no scratching from the dogs. Now have laminate on the stairs.

When our ancient Electrolux finally died a few years ago, my wife got a Infinity upright.

It's still going without issues. It was supposed to be good for pet hair, that's what sold her. Seems to do OK with it.

I just got the same on 2 weeks a go. Does a real good job with pet hair and other dirt. All washable filters. No more bags for me.
