I now have an excuse to go back to the way my grandparents lived (my parents are the boomers) they smoked like bad chimneys and drank beer and whiskey like fish. Everything was slathered with lard or butter. They didn't eat salad or anything green for that matter, red meat and potatoes, maybe a carrot in a beef stew but that's it. My grandmother was a seamstress and my pop owned a marina. Had my first beer at 4 yrs old pretending to steer his boat, it was docked. Never too early to teach us how to drink and steer :) I supposedly learned the next day NOT to drink pop's beer when the can I picked up to drink from was being used as an ashtray

Maybe it's all the processed foods folks eat these days. The 4 food groups these days seem to be eat out, take out, frozen or canned :) All these low fat and fat free things weren't around back then, food tasted good because it had fat for flavor, not some weird chemicals to fake the flavor.

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing :)

If you look at the two major factors to long life around the world........ Activity and processed food, or lack of processed food. Move, every day as much as possible, never take the elevator, park at the furthest part of the parking lot. No fast food, make it your self use butter and cream, but make it from non processed foods.

The biggest factor is to move, run, walk, cycle, anything just move.

Been in motion here for over a decade--always always movin doin shakin something up--- gotta keep things movin in life or we grow stale---hard to relax at times though ::P ,hence WINE by the gallons!.... all in all good bad ugly I guess........

This article makes perfect sense. The previous gen was the 'greatest' .... maybe the weak did not survive to take the survey. :)

Don't know that many boomers well.....I'm 'X' and my parents are 'Lost'. My grandparents were afraid of doctors...only went to the hospital to be born, give birth and die.

Did the boomers think they were paragons of healthy living or something??

Ahem. That should be "Do..." We are sickly but still here. >>

Of course they do. Started all the non-smoking, exercising, eat green crap stuff etc.

That would be me.

Look at he artificial garbage they put in our food nowadays. All the artificial hormones to grow meats, veggies, fruits......then you have the wonderful preservatives they put I everything. Not to mention the artificial sweeteners.

Look how early youngsters turn into adults these days, tell me the garbage in the food chain don't contribute to that speeding up of puberty......

I stay away from that stuff as best as I can.

Yep Scotty...the stuff they put in food to make it grow gets put into you. Why would it NOT have a similar effect on kids as it does for a calf? I eat very little processed foods or fast foods. I enjoy cooking and am one of the original ADD adults (meaning I am not a good sit-er-down-er).

I drink beer, whiskey, vodka, wine and smoke cigars while sweating bacon grease. I don't plan on costing the health care system a whole lot. I will hit the ground and be down and out when the time comes. My family heritage is of pretty healthy, long lived folks that drop dead (usually doing what they like). That doesn't sound like a bad way....

Now, if we can just stick to the plan.

I only buy what I have to from grocery stores any more.

1. Raise our own Cornish X chickens twice per year - about 20 at a time.
2. Buy hogs from my brother in law twice a year. I know what they eat and what they aren't shot up with. Make my own bacon sausage, etc that tastes 1000% better than anything you buy in the store.
3. Put 2 deer in the freezer each year.
4. Get fresh diary from my BIL daily - starting to make our own butter and some fresh cheese. This stuff is wicked good.
5. Put up 15 gallons of apple sauce, 40 gallons of cider, and some other stuff from the apple trees in our yard.
6. Can/freeze a ton of garden veggies every year.

I used to eat junk about 5 years ago and felt terrible. I didn't want my yungun's living on mac and cheese and chicken nuggets and made a complete 180 about 3 years ago. One of the best things I ever did.

Dont forget, things that people consider hard work today( pretty much all forms of manual labor) were just considered normal parts of daily living. Maybe there should be a comparison study of the general health of pellet piggies and cord hoarders ;).

I'll drink to that!
