In most of my experiences, yes......
I hit some stainless steel screws once......no blue streaks around them, stainless is non-ferrous and didn't leave any trace. Not to mention stainless is harder and did some nice damage to the bandsaw we had the log in.

That'll burn a few tanks of gas through the saw. You say the locals took the easy and left that. Did they tell the homeowner they would take it all when they started ?
Not sure, most likely no. This was dropped in his front yard by the power company, and I'm sure that the local scroungers took it upon themselves to help themselves. Heathens, I tell ya.......

We eat at a restaurant on a bi-annual basis (honeymoons and birthdays) just west of Bedford, PA, that was an inn built around 1760, which was home to meetings of farmers and rebels in the infancy of the Whiskey Rebellion.......someone killed the tree from that "Maple finished whiskey" ad.

"Scotty Overkill's Pennsylvania Maple Rye whiskey" has a nice ring to it....
ya know the first moonshiners were from Pennsy - they moved south after the whiskey rebellion.

Silver Maple makes great bowls.....
uh-oh....I can see where this is going. I'll be out there 'select-cutting' chunks out of that trunk. May have to ship some out to Thistle and some up to fishingpol to get some carvings/turnings out of them.
If the time provides, I'll do it........we'll see how it goes!
I agree on the denser knarlies burning longer, I like burning uglies in the stove. And as far as your trip, Chief, have a safe one. Tip the wings back and forth on the plane when you cross over my town!As gnarly as those uglies are going to be Scotty, you might be surprised at how dense they are. May not burn like straight fast growing Silver Maple.
Edit: I am flying right over the top of you Wednesday, landing in Harrisburg. I will wave if you send up some smoke signals.
Apparently NOT! I just got a call from Joe, that guy we were to remove that trunk for said he woke up yesterday afternoon (he works third trick) to find the entire trunk is GONE!! Somebody got the whole thing with a BACKHOE! He said he could see where the outriggers were in the ground. Not sure if the city did it or if it was an individual. He's going to try to find out today. WOW!!

Yes it does, Jon. But its par for the course for me......seems that's just how it goes. We still have the spruce to remove but he wants to wait til spring to do that. I was looking forward to busting that monster maple trunk into pieces this weekend.......Damn.....That sucks.
I'll bet the original cutting crew did it. If they dropped that tree because of a "rite of way" situation, they are most certainly responsible for getting it out of the home owners yard. Not too mention - not too many of us wood scroungers have a backhoe handy (well...I do, but I am in no way "typical"
)

We will be heading out that way this summer to a cabin up above Belleville. Some good BBQ and cheeseburger subs in Belleville. I'll have to stop in and see you when we head out.
Definately, Swags. Give me a heads up when you head out this way. If its the Belleville near Mt. Union, that's right down the road from me!!
Dang, that blows. I bucked a trunk like that last summer for $100. It was actually kinda fun. Easy cutting, and all I had to do was scoot the rounds around that were in my way.
Like the chief says, them knarly pieces can be dense. I picked up a couple loads from my MIL's town after a tornado went thru, and it was the longest burning silver maple I've ever had. There were many huge trees, and everybody took the easy stuff. I cut for three days all over town, and ended up with two loads of wood that I wanted to take home.
Hope you get enough for next winter now

I was really stoked about burying the 42" bar into that log!! Wasn't meant to be, I guess!
