Englander 30 window

Question here:
I have an Englander 30. Lately, in the interest of getting a longer burn time, I have been putting my normal load in, north to south. After I fill the box(my splits are only 17 inches or so) I have space at the front. after the fire gets going and the temp up, I open the door and put 2 more splits in the entrance way, but not blocking the air. However, these splits are close to the window-maybe even touch the window. I have been doing this for the last month or so despite my wife's fears. To allay her fears, I came to ask opinions-is this dangerous, or is the glass receiving the same heat from the wood against as it would anyways?

Not dangerous. The glass will not crack. No worries.

Obviously you want to make sure the splits are in the firebox before closing the door as a split sticking to far out will break the glass when you attempt to close the door.

I do something similar on my 30. I feel that I get longer burns when loading N/S then load E/W two splits than just loading N/S. I am not a big fan of E/W, I dont get the best of burns that way.

I do mostly E/W. I am just able to pack the stove tighter that way. Burn times and temp are better because of this.

I sometimes do this myself on the overnight load. I'll sometimes slip and extra one in from the end door and in turn I'll end up with a split gently lying against the front glass. As long as it's not tight as to bust through, I've never saw the harm.

Yeah, I know, but they are also holding the other splits in place when I pack the bastard tight.

I can see doing it on E/W loads but not N/S.

Doesn't matter, really, as we both load E/W most of the time.

I can't get a complete burn worth a damn in the stove E/W. I keep trying it and swearing I will never do it again. Last season it seemed to be working fine for me. This year I just can't make it work. The back splits just sit there and make smoke. Probably did last year too but I was asleep when it was happening.

I get this, too. I give it more air as the burn progresses. Seems to eliminate the smoke for me. The overnight burn? Dunno.

But, I can pack it better E/W, which means I get better burn times.

ETA: Problem is probably that I modified the stove for N/S burns years ago. Got rid of the doghouse and that unregulated air in the front which would probably torch its way to the back. But this way it is a beautiful N/S burner.

We are burning 95% of the time in our 30 - E/W. It has worked great. Less wood (3 medium splits on the bottom), long burn times, great heat. But my stove hasn't been modified in any way - except for closing the gap at the top baffles with a 3/16ish steel rod in a hollow gasket. This forces all of the heat to move across the baffles to the front. The dog house is very handy for this E/W burn. B. Bart have you thought about reverting back to using the dog house again - for E/W burns? If nothing else just to give it a try?

We are burning mostly E/W in about the same sized firebox. Our doghouse (EBT) is also blocked off. I do open the air toward the end of the burn. Most of the time I get a good thorough burn, but not always. Had the last split in the back of the stove staring at me with cold black eyes a couple days back.

Yeah. Thought about it. Might try it at the start of next season but I hate that darn doghouse so maybe not. Without air from it ricocheting off of the wood I don't have to wipe the glass but once a month or less and it stays clear. And love having good control of the primary air.

One of the reasons I was looking forward to the 30 is having the option of N/S or E/W, with the Napoleon except for cut-offs I had to load E/W. I tried a few times E/W and just don't have any luck with getting the back pieces to burn and not smolder. On the Englander behalf it is one large firebox and only so much air. Right now is the time that I really would like to do E/W, 28 outside at 8:35 PM, and 78 in here. The next reload is around 10ish. I hate to go N/S because it is hot enough but don't want to not load because it will be too cold by morning. In late June into July I will really miss the challenges when I'm roasting my tail off hearing the A/C roaring all night.
