anode rod question

I seem to go thru magnesiun rods and was wondering if aluminum rods would work the same
 
It would probably work but do you want that dissolved in in your water?

Don't take my word for it but I think the oxidation from aluminum would only be aluminum oxide, ie. (alumina) which is a component of ceramic. Byproducts??? I don't know.
