When looking for a contractor to install my wood insert, what kind of license should he have, other than a driver license and an HIC license? Thank you.
 
Look for a csia or ncsg certified sweep.

Bingo! It may not guarantee a great job will be performed, but it gives you an indication the contractor took the time to get certified. Usually, that should indicate they are more dedicated to their job than a fly-by-night contractor.
 
d34 "prefab equipment" is the required license in my area
nfi or csia are not required, but nice to know your contractor is well educated
