Hope winter is about over or I am going to be out in the cold and snow rummaging through the stacks>>

Oh man Steve, WTH?
How late do you burn? We're not done until mid May, and that wouldn't do it.
I discovered early that I need about 5 cord in a cold winter....maybe a bit more. I always overdo that by almost a cord just to be safe.
Do you have a thief?
I am the only thief LOL. I have plenty of 2 year old wood. Just getting low in the wood shed. I always try to cut it close so I don't have much left in the wood shed. I like having the space in the summer for other things. There is a 9 ft by 5 ft rack on the outside of the wood shed that is ready to burn, so I don't have to go far. It is just nice to go in the wood shed when it is nasty and close the door, have a smoke, fill the satchel with wood. We burn all of March and some in April. Here is a pic outside the wood shed, I'm OK. yd shed 2.jpg

Well, I guess the brightside is that you have stacks you can rummage thru to get you thru the winter. Some aren't that fortunate...I've seen a few threads on the forum about folks that have run out already.

Happened to me 2 yrs ago. You wouldn't believe the crap I was scrounging and trying to burn. Got 3 years ahead last year but have been lagging behind this year in my scrounging. I'm going to use about 3 cords this year but have only gotten about 1.5 paid back to the stacks. Still plenty of time though.

Yes Blue, I am fine. I have lots of seasond wood. If it is nice this weekend, I will haul some more in the wood shed. I have run short a few times in 40 years, but not for a long time. I am about 4 years ahead and found out a long time ago how painful it is to not be ahead.

It is no fun to be behind Rusty. Go get that wood. You will sleep better;)

Same here. We just cleared out our first bay in the woodshed which is perfect timing because the snow has melted off the roads and that empty bay is where we like to keep the bikes for easy access when we want to go for a ride.

I emptied the shed for this year's supply last night. I have a little more in the shed but that was really for the year after next

I guess the last two winters screwed up my judgement on how much I'd need. Last night I was looking at pictures from the same week last year...I was tilling the garden exactly one year ago...and mowed the yard the week after. Looking out the window right now at 3" of snow on the ground.

looks the same in my two sheds outside, its a scary feeling when you see the back of the shed and its only February, but we have had warm weather for the past couple weeks so i'm making few trips between the shed and house,....just don't want to have to uncover the stacks before spring hits.

I'm getting close too, fellas. I brought two weeks' worth into the basement on Saturday afternoon, if we get the warm-up they are calling for, I may be able to stretch that out to three. Only around a cord and a half left in this years'stash, and we usually burn up til the beginning of May (nights), I'll be cutting it close. Lots of two year seasoned locust and red maple at the other end of the stack but I hate wasting good stuff like locust in mild weather......I used a bit more wood this past winter, but I had a PILE of silver maple in this years' stash......I'm STILL burning a steady supply of silver coming out of the stacks!!

Heck chief, you're in good shape. I also try to overstock the woodshed and it's worked out so far. We'll never be cold as long as the oil burner works, but I've come to despise the sound of it running.

I'm getting low myself. We just started using wood so I didn't have any planning on building up any stores of wood. Hoping it warms up soon so I can put up a wood shed and build up a few cords for next year even if I have to buy it all.

I right there with you. Actually, my shed would be about empty by now if I hadn't been bringing a few arm loads in here and there over the past week. I can only get 2.5 cord into the shed which just doesn't cut it. At least you ahve a nice dry rack of wood right outside. This is what I have to dig through to get to my stacks.

You aren't alone! I'm down to about 1.5 cords of Red Oak. I expect to get into mid April with it. I do have some Ash but it was cut this summer and wasn't planning on using it til next winter. Can always go back to burning pallets....which sux.

I emptied the racks on the back porch, and refilled just before the last snow (Storm Rocky). I used more that last year I think, and I may top off this weekend. We are pretty much just burning at night the last few nights here, but you can never rule out a little march Madness blizzard rolling in. Yep, I think I will top off.

Steve, you'll be fine. My stash in the barn is actually lower than it has been since we put the barn up and started storing wood there. But I think we still have an abundance and won't have to add any before the end of this burning season. Nice warm up expected this weekend and March tends to raise in temperature around 12 degrees or more from the first of the month to the last.

I was thinking something similar today. I THINK I have enough wood under my deck (right outside the basement door) that I won't need to bring anymore from the main pile. It's not a big deal if I do, but by March I've usually gotten tired of that and want the wood-getting to be easier.

Sounds like you are planning on building a shed and stacking your new wood in there. It won't dry by next year if you do that. In fact if you don't have it split by now it's going to be tough burning next year anyway especially in the fall.

Get your wood NOW c/s/s and do your shed this summer. Wood sheds are for storing wood after its dried. Lots iof info on here on the process and timeline. Good luck and get going now.
