Still don't understand why we can't get a 4.0ish liter diesel in a half ton wrapper. I like torque as much as anyone...but I dont need 700 lb ft. I just want to tow 7000 lbs and get 25 mpg.

My best friend in HS had an Isuzu P'up with the turbodiesel...... I LOVED that little truck...

The two biggest problems with bringing in a small diesel in a 1/2 ton is 1. cost.... that $5k premium makes it a niche market.. at best.... and #2. US emissions laws.... which kill any chances of many of the best diesels from landing on our shores....

Me too,
and while were at it let's do a 50 hp 110 ft lbs of toqure in a commuter that does 60+ mpg

You are so correct sir!

also we have that crappy fuel that lacks lubricants that they allow across the pond

I've got a 111HP, 42ftlbs commuter that gets 52? does that count?

it's also does 0-60 in 3.1 secs :D

Your not pushing off a cliff are you ?;lol

A guy in our canoe club had a LUV like that .
took a min. or two to hit 45mph

& HE LOVED IT

Must have 2 wheels!

I had eliminator did 0-50 =2.0 & 60 @ ABOUT 3.1 but didn't do 42 mpg

My dad retired from GM about 5 years ago and that was a plan when he left. They actually had a few 1500's running around with a small diesel in them.

The Ram 1500 is supposed to get a V-6 diesel in the third quarter of this year. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/driveon/2013/02/13/ram-diesel-chrysler-first/1917131/

Wow the misinformation in this thread is almost comical! I think you guys need to stick to giving advice on wood stoves and not trucks!

Never had an A904 behind a Cummins, that's a gas engine 3 speed transmission. A518 is the trans used. In any case yeah, the auto trans is a PITA!

53 block on Cummins was 24v 2nd gen issue and it wasn't an issue with all of them. Maybe 10% if that.

Can find a decent Cummins 2500/3500 or Ford 7.3L for under 10k without looking to heard. It'll be in the late 90s early 2000s but big deal? Not everyone needs to drop $30+k on a newish truck. I had a 95 3500 CTD Dodge I bought for $3000. Needed front tires and a bit of front end work, put maybe $1500 into it over the course of a couple years.

High maintenance on a diesel vs what?... If anything it's just the other way around. Diesels don't live in heavy equipment and commercial trucks because they are always breaking down. Before you say those are different engines... lookup Case Cummins.... the B series motor was used in all sort of equipment before it went into trucks.

A904... A518... doesn't matter.... Chrysler can't build an auto to save their lives.... the auto behind the cummins was horrible!!!!!

The high maintenance part I believe comes to the cost of a simple service.... gas = $19.99..... diesel $59.99+

High maintenance on a diesel vs what?...

I think it's the cost of maintenance of a gas verse diesel that makes me say they're high maintenance. A set of injectors for my Dmax are 2K+, the glow plugs can break when you replace them requiring the heads to be pulled, the CP3 pumps can go bad, some head gaskets have been known to fail the list goes on and on. All things can break gas or diesel, when a diesel breaks the cost is much greater. I'm personally ok with this as I feel the pros outweigh the cons.

The 12V Cummins are the cats meow as far as I'm concerned. I still don't think you can find a decent 4x4 diesel around these parts for less than 10K with less than 200K on the clock.

In the end it doesn't really matter much what name or whose design ya get. Each and every one gas or diesel has good and bad points. At 10k going to be hard pressed for much of anything that isn't tired out somewhere in the system. Much as I like a diesel, with epa screwing the fuel, it just isn't worth it. Not that the gas is any better ( they got some real bone heads in that epa thing). Maintenance on the diesel is going to be at least 3 times the gas. Unless pulling heavy loads a distance there is nothing to be gained. I have aF350- triton V10 just a hair less spec wise than the 7.3 it spends fully 90% of the year sitting in the garage. Due most of my stuff with the F250,5.4

Isn't that exactly what the Ford EcoBoost F150 claims to do? Although I don't see long-term reliability being anywhere near the same league as a diesel would be.

Perhaps GM will finally dust off the BabyMax they developed and mothballed a few years ago.

I don't care who built it or what trans it is. Gas or diesel. If you are in the position of needing to rebuild an auto trans in a truck that you intend to keep, and continue pulling/hauling heavy loads, there are some trans builders out there that will send you a much more durable, upgraded, transmission/torque converter combo in exchange for cash and your fried POS.

The sick part is that Cummins and Isuzu have had this exact engine on the market for 25+ years. We just can't seem to get it in a passenger vehicle.

Ford had one too. I think they had a 6-banger Mini-stroke in some cab-overs a several years ago. I don't remember how that one turned out.

I'd have to disagree with your last line.
I have a 90 gm 1 ton 4x4,6.2diesel,cheep parts, easy to work on and will get 17 mpg pulling a tandem axle trailer.Just don't expect it to pull the hills fast.
I work on my own stuff, and there isn't any part on the truck that i can't fix.My wife has a 03 GM that i fixed for her,if something electronic go'es bad on that....not sure that i'll be able to fix it.
Point is don't count out the old GMs if your kid can pull wrenches,if not buy a newer one and tell him to save for repairs, most will need some at one point.

I sortov agree - The NA 6.2 (and 6.9 Ford) are good engines as long as you don't ask them to do too much.

Example i paid $75 to $300 dollars for new injection pumps,$180 for a new set of OEM injectors, and they only take a few hours to change either with normal tools that most have.
And your military relyed on the GM diesel for yrs, thats whats in all the Hummers

I've run a few older diesels like the GM 5.7 & 6.2. The 6.2 wasn't a bad motor. Didn't make a ton of power (about equal to a 305 Chev) but decent fuel mileage. Tow heavy with one though and don't expect to be doing anywhere near the speed limit other than on the downhill.

Wish I could keep the auto trans in my truck alive. I've killed it 4 or 5 times now. Nothing I did wrong on the rebuild, just parts failed. Last time I lost the lube circuit and melted it down. Not sure if it was a pump seal or what. In any case I refused to drop 5-6k on a "built" trans when I can do the same thing for about $2k in parts.

And now we rely on China for our Army's boots ;em

when it all comes down to it all the brands have some good points & some bad

I use to have brand loyalty not any more <>

Cheers

Their original in line 6 was the best for mpg vs touqre .then they got into the power wars

Wow, gotta hand it to the manufacturers they really know how to confuse their customers and keep them loyal at the same time!

I used to have an '88 Chevy K2500... it had a 350 in it that had the summit catalog thrown at it... 300ish HP... about 450ftlbs torque... I had a local shop rebuild the 700r4.... first time.. the engine shattered the sun shell... second rebuild (under warranty) they made sure they did not see it again... I loved taking that rusty, red 20+ year old pickup and just frying the back tires off of it :D

I miss that truck... it would embarass our cummins pulling a freighted 14' box trailer (9k+).. but it would only get 11mpg... downhill... with the engine off....
