Where is your prep area? (bucking, splitting etc)

Not bragging but my place is ok looking and lets face it, wood is messy! As far as the grass and grounds under it. My dad is old school and does not give a rip what people think but in my case (the burbs) I really dont want my stack of wood in the yard. I do however have alot of woods in my area thats not mine.

The owners live a few hours away and never visit and they own alot of land in my town. I have started a stack that will hold a cord but I have about 2 more cord in a pile in the corner of my yard. Im planning on moving this pile down into the woods. its about a 30 second walk but my dad is bad against it fearing someone will steal it. I live in a one horse town with low crime thank the lord.

I use to stack all my wood out front in plain view of the house etc.
Now I split all my wood in my woods.......keep the splitter covered up in the woods........stack all my wood in an open field.
I am fortunate to be able to do that because I am kinda picky my ownself when it comes to keeping things in order

My prep area is along side my driveway behind the house. It is not visible from the street and only one neighbor can see it and only during the winter when the leaves are gone. My overflow stacks are under the deck, not easily visible to anybody.

The first picture is just after Hurricane Sandy, the second is today. The third picture is the rest of the split "Sandy" wood under the deck. All split with a maul on the rounds in the second picture. I've got to go get some more wood to split or join a gym...

Mine is right behind my barn/woodshed. There's actually an old barn foundation under it so it doesn't get real muddy. About 100 yards from the house.

Sounds like you may not be planning on talking to the owners first. I'd highly advise against that.

As for where our prep area is, well, it just happens to be all over the place.

Fortunately I am not in a place where beauty matters and I am on the Dennis plan with wood all over the place right now. By the time lawn mowing season arrives it will all be neatly stacked in one area of my lawn attempting to remove as much of the mowable footprint as possible

I tried moving things back by the woods, about 100 yds. behind the house. My wife thought that was silly. Soooo, my back yard is currently a mess until things dry up and I can get it all split and stacked and raked and tidied up.

This is my first year, scrounging in urban and suburban residential areas. So far I have hand-split most of the wood right where I found it, before it ever got loaded into my car (old Volvo wagon). Since October or so I've probably hand-split close to 3 cords in other people's yards, providing much amusement.

For a while, I did over 95% of the processing in the driveway next to the pole barn where the logs got dropped.
Now, I do the processing wherever it's most convenient. When cutting trees on the property, I bring the rounds to the stacking area (usually) and s/s right there. Sometimes, I'll take the splitter to the rounds then move the splits to the stacking area.
I have the remnants of a white pine and spruce in the side yard that will get processed right there, then moved to the stacking area.
When at my sis-in-law's cutting, I'll bring those rounds home and s/s back in the field.
This may all change, depending on conditions and convenience. Very few hard and fast rules here. Well, except the one about trying really hard to not cut off my fingers....but I think that's the only one.

All my wood is cut and split in the woods then loaded on the truck and brought home. I'm one of those neat freaks that when I mow I can't have one blade of grass sticking up past the others. I don't even like tire tracks in my yard from the truck. I take a lot of pride in the house and yard. Most people think I nuts for keeping things so clean but that's how I was raised. There will be no cutting or splitting in my yard if I can help it. I don't really like it stacked where it is but I have no other place to put it and I'm NOT giving up wood heat. I don't even like a tarp covering it but again not much I can do about that either. As long as its stacked very neatly it doesn't bother me that much

The farm where I get most of my wood is about 15 miles away, I take my splitter, and come home with 1/3 cord all split and ready to stack.

Then I stack in different places, I have a place for each Oak, Black Locust, White Ash, Cherry, I did have my different types of Oaks seperated but that got to be too much of a pain.

I have one area for splitting around the house (pic 4330) I like splitting most of our wood in the woods, all our wood is stacked within camera range.

I'm starting to line the whole back of my property with face cord.
Single row in 8'x4'. lengths. I'm up to 13. Warmer winter has given
me more than I planned for. Not that it is a bad thing of course. Just
don't want stacks all over the place.

Where ever I can and hopefully not at my house. The last few years I've lucked out being able to split over in the woods I've been clearing. Your right, wood is a mess and I think that mess looks good in the woods.

I usually cut the rounds in the woods but wind up splitting at home. I dump the wood in my back yard next to the stacks, then split and stack in about the same place. My advantage is that I have no neighbors close, am out in the country, and wife doesn't care where I put the wood or how it looks. I do try to keep it neat most of the time, but there are times when it looks like a dozen trees exploded. For what it's worth, I would be very hesitant to put wood on someone else's land, and definitely wouldn't before I talked to them about it. I also think that a neatly stacked cord of wood can be a very nice addition to a backyard, even in the burbs. Apparently I'm one of the only people who think this....

My answer would be it depends.... in the winter... the splitter lives in my barn... and depending on which part of the family land I am working.... the wood is either dumped out of the tractor's bucket... or hand unloaded from a trailer.... it gets spit in the barn... where it gets stacked depends on the "state of things".... 3 chord go into the shed... anything else goes out behind the barn. Once the snow stops... the splitter gets pulled behind the barn where it lives until the fall....

For what it's worth, I would be very hesitant to put wood on someone else's land, and definitely wouldn't before I talked to them about it.

I wouldn't even consider stacking on someone else's land.... legally... you just *gave* it to them! especially if you never talked to the landowner first!

If the wood is not on my property I buck it and bring it to my round pile. If its at home I prefer to split it in the bush and bring it out and over to my stacking area. It's nice to leave the barky mess in the bush to decay.

A previous owner sold some gravel, leaving me a somewhat flat area where I can easily rotate the stacking and the processing areas from year to year. I skid logs out of the woods to this spot, do the CSS there, stacking right where the log pile was. Then the fall before burning will move it to the woodshed at the house (about a quarter of mile drive). Wife loves having the mess out of the yard, and it leaves more room in the yard for other things.

Side yard in front of detached garage. Makes for a nice level area for splitting and is close to stacking cribs.

that is definitely true.... I shovel it into my tractor's bucket.... and cart it back into my woods...

I buck it in the woods or get the rounds when my tree service buddy calls then I dump it in the driveway. When I have time I split the rounds here and there then stack it in the back yard out of street view. Once its stacked I then can sweep the driveway and wait for the next loads.

I really need to move to somewhere with property because there isn't enough room to make single row stacks on a .25 acre lot!
