Going to be laying some laminate flooring in a rec room I have been slowly working on, the room is going to be approx 15'x27' What way is recommended that I run the flooring? Should the long side of the laminate pieces run with the length of the room or the width? Was just standing down there thinking about it and after 15 mins or so I am still not sure what I should do. What do you guys think/recommend? I am slightly lean towards running the long side with the width, thinking with the length I would get a bowling alley feeling. But I am also installing a drop (tile) ceiling (2x4') and the ceiling will be installed with the long side of the tile running with the length of the room, not sure if that matters........just looking for opinions. Thanks!

When I laid wood flooring in our dining room I had the same question. The recommendation I found, and I don't recall where, was to lay the flooring so it is parallel to the windows. Hope that helps.

Hmm, just thinking out loud here.
Since its laminate thermal shrinkage will be uniform width versus length so that's not a factor.
There's the optical effect of shortening and lengthening. Kind of like how wearing vertical stripes makes a person look taller etc.So if you want to make the long room look more square then go parallel to the short walls.
You'll have to make more cuts, and hence have more waste if you run parallel to the short walls.
I vaguely remember something about windows too and think it was related to your sight line and the reflections you see of the windows. Not sure the effect though.

If the flooring will be a different material than the floor in the room leading to it, I'd run it so the length of the pieces goes down the 27 foot long side. It's kinda like stripes on a fat person. You don't want them to go horizontal because it makes them look fatter. But making them look taller isn't bad.

Some laminates have a recommended max. run length. Check to see what the manufacturer suggests.

Traditionally you run the length of the room, but as Beetle said there are usually a maximum length of the run . Check the manufacturer's guide.

When I laid mine, the directions specified running long ways. I ran 4 rooms worth, running into closets, and through doorways. Did one complete floor when done. Was a bit tricky in a couple closet front wall/corners, but came out real nice. A small cordless circular saw and a jigsaw with fine blade are your friend here. Wear a dust mask when cutting, stuff is nasty.
