The first day of spring here doesn't look too "springlike" ! 30" of snow on the ground, 4F this morning and an expected high of 25F today, almost 15 degrees below normal. I'm tired of this sh#t and there is no sign of a warmup anywhere in sight.... global warming my #ss !

It never fails, I have tons of work to do outside this spring and now it looks like it will be 3-4 weeks at least before the damn snow might be gone. Last year at this time it was 65F and the little snow we had was long gone. I had my yard all raked and ready to go, garden was tilled. What a difference a year makes ! I'm bored out of my skull, I can't take this much longer. This snow has to MELT soon ! LOL

Got to use this quote 3 times today. We got a foot of it yesterday.

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.
Henry Van Dyke

We had our first spring day a few weeks ago when temps were in the 60's, it's a distant memory now! About a month go I was thinking that again I would have wood left over. I think I'll still have a surplus in the shed come late April but it won't be much.

Its bull crap.

To me winter's getting a little long but I really sympathize with the maple syrup makers and this will extend their season so I'll live with it. On March 19, 2012 it was 79 degrees here and their season was over. With this weather, the buds haven't even thought of budding out. Plus it gives them a few days to kick back and relax while they wait for the next warm day.

Yes, we were off to a decent start last year until that heat wave hit, it hit even all the way up here. Then it was all she wrote. Today it's a snow day here and wintery weather in the forecast still.

Don't know about the rest of you guys but I see a LOT of wood piles that have taken a serious hit in the last 6 weeks. Not been extremely cold but just steady upper single digits to 20's for a long time here.
I'm with the OP. Thoroughly tired of winter.........remind me again why we live in Michigan?

On the positive side: Four weeks from now will be very different. This winter is more like Michigan winters of the past, which should be good in the long run. Last years early warm-up followed by sustained frost killed it for Michigan fruit growers and delivered a hit to vegetable gardens as well. Hoping for the best..........

I live in Michigan because so few others do. I remember up at MTU people would always say how badly they wanted to move out of the UP. My response; "by all means."

Agree with that on the early spring last year. I know a guy up on the Leelanau peninsula that has an apple orchard which usually produces about 3,500-4,000 crates (big orchard type crates not bushels) of Honeycrisp apples. Last years harvest totaled 35 or less than 1% of normal crop. He says another year of that and he's going to have to sell out to a developer. Which is a crying shame.

I lived up here all my life and altho the winters have generally been less severe than 20-30 years ago, they always seemed to transition into spring about when they were supposed to. By now we would have had "some" melting, but always seemed to get that last big storm around St. Patricks day, but then it would start to warm up nice. Last year we had no winter, a warm March and went right into summer.

I'm hoping that when the big "Greenland Block" that is directing all the cold air into the states breaks down, that it warms up fast and melts all this white bullsh*t in a hurry. The snow was welcome because it has been very dry for years around here, but the cold is definitely NOT welcome ! If it stays cold for another 2 weeks, we will most likely still have snow on the ground in May around here. Only seen that a few times. Sometimes I think you really have to be nuts to live up here !!

Hey ya uppers, ya don't know why ya live up there??? Must be the weather!! Honestly, I hate the long winter here but will take an extra 2 weeks of winter if it warms up and stays warm come April. Last year we had tons of flowers on our apples, pears prunes and cherries. Then a week of frost around Memorial day and they were gone. Not one piece of fruit last year. I am worried about the deer kill this year though. If da U.P. don't melt some snow real quick there is gunna be a lot of dead deer in the woods. Have ya seen any starving deer up there lately???

The deer, yes a valid concern. My fifth winter at this location and have never supplemented their feeding until last week with hay and carrots. (Well except what they take from the newly planted Christmas trees). I have seen many do the extra stretch upwards to the lowest remaining green into the cedars. If you know what I mean when they go totally straight from rear hoof to nose not just up on hind legs. Only one is puffy faced, it lost its mother in the hunt and is now banished by all others. But still has persevered . All will be good..................

It's been the same up here. No deeepp -40's that we had yrs ago, but that steady lows with wind really put a hurt on the piles.

I have gone through roughly 1.5 cord of wood more this year than all of last season. And that was counting through May 1st last year. Still have another month and a week until May 1st! :( And yes, I am sick of winter. ;lol

Haven't seen any deer around my house now for almost 3 weeks. When the snow gets deep they head about a mile east of here to a swamp. Not much food in there, but a lot easier to move around. The last 2 deer I saw were a doe and fawn, and the snow was up to the belly on the fawn, and we've got another 7-8" since then. I've seen several deer a little south of here and they still look good, a little thin but OK.

All my apple trees were OK last year, they didn't bud out as early as they did south of here and survived those late frosts. This year they may not bud out till May !

We had -30 C this morning
Down the the last 1/4 row of wood, started winter with 2 rows less than i wanted.
Have lots of wood in the yard, just not next to the boiler room.
But we had a good winter in all, never had to plow the yard this year.A couple of warm days will get rid of the little snow we have.
We had two cold snaps that lasted a couple of weeks, but we had some warm weather that lasted as long too.
So i would say last winter is the kind of winter that sucks people into thinking that winter in the Yukon is a piece of cake.

It is kind of funny. In the late fall I get excited when the cold weather gets here. My wife thinks I am a little off my rocker, I think. But that is when the boiler will run on it's own, just have to put wood in it twice a day. At that point I am tired of starting fires once or twice a day like I have been doing from Spring all the way through till late Fall for the little heat I need and DHW. Plus I know it is the beginning of cutting time for me, I get to go out in the woods. Love it when the bugs are gone and the ground starts to freeze up. Perfect for cutting wood. I would bet a lot of you wood burners are the same in the late fall. And now we are all tired of winter. ;lol

In terms of snowfall, are you having a normal year? I would have thought there was a lot of snow in the Yukon in winter?

Same here. I'm happy to see spring arrive but having to make a new fire every day is a PIA.

I do most, if not all, of my wood cutting in the spring. Try to get it all cut split and stacked before the end of May. But yes, cutting in the fall is enjoyable too. As long as its not too warm and the bugs aren't bugging you !

Hi Pat
We don't really have a normal snowfall.
Iv had years that i seem to never stop plowing,i have a comercial business on the Alaska Highway and some yrs i haul it across the road with a loader when i run out of room.
A lot of our snow falls only last a few minutes, those are the ones i like.

Sounds kind of like us as of late. One year we get tons of snow and then the next year hardly any. I plow snow for myself and 6 other people on our road. I also plow the road itself, about 2/3 mile long. The road is so narrow now that 2 cars can barely get by each other. Once the banks get about 3' high, you just can't push the snow over them and it just falls back into the roadway. The driveways are like tunnels and there are mountains of snow in peoples yards. If we were to get hit again I really don't know where I would push it, I'm taking my plow off my truck this weekend, if we get hit again, it will sit until it melts, I refuse to plow snow after spring arrives.

Heard on the news last night that some places along the Lake Superior shoreline have between 48" and as much as 62" of snow on the ground !! The snow piles are so high in some towns that the people can't see out there windows. LOL

Wow. Glad I am not getting anywhere near that snowfall. Although we could use the water. I do not want all that snow! Hope yours starts to melt soon.

Same thing here Pat. Just finished opening the neighbors 3/4 mile driveway. They ran out of plow room and everything rolls back in the roadway. The rain we had a couple of e=weeks ago didn't help either. I use a snowblower mounted on the Bobcat on our 2/3 mile driveway, no problem with banks.;) No maple sap flowing yet, I had our dock in the lake March 31, 2012.

I'm ready for warm weather. I don't mind firing the boiler, but my work don't get busy untill it warms up a little and I'm ready to make some money !
