Cherry, I believe.

A shot each of the bark close up and the heart wood is better, but it looks like some kind of cherry. Split it.. the inside should be a nice cherry color and it should smell great.

Walnut.

Soft Maple

Still cherry.

(Split it and take another pic).

Doh, wait, I want to change my answer. That's a dead ringer for apple.

Well, we can eliminate walnut but the others are all still on the table. The bark is unlike the soft maple I've cut, but maybe nrford is used to some other variety. I still think it looks like apple or a light-colored cherry.

If it was Cherry, the fragrance would be unmistakeable.

Looks like Cherry to me after seeing that split piece. The original picture kinda looked like Pine to me; I have been fooled at first glance several times when pulling up to the pile at the local compost site and seeing wood that looks like Cherry but on closer examination it is Pine. But that pink grain tells me its Cherry, although a little lighter pink than I usually see.

sniff the dang thing already,......that'll give it away. Looks like cherry heartwood, but the bark ain't right....
Does it smell like a fine pipe tobacco or like pine-sol cleaner??
