Wick system for the garden.

Ok here an idea I have been thinking about. My water table is very high in my area. Well is less than 20 foot deep and you can hit water at about 18 inch's. My thought is to use a post hole digger to about 40 inch's put a thick rope in there and back fill with compost. (Just for my mound crops) Should not even need to water at all but maybe the first two weeks. What you think will it work or not?

I'm not thinking that a significant amount of water will wick up against gravity. Just a WAG, though.

How about digging a small covered pit, and putting a small fountain pump in on a timer?

I can pump it with my well pump. Wick system been use a lot with other types of plants. I am thinking it should wick right up a 3 inch rope. Split the rope into a few 100 pieces at the plant.

Its one of those things that can bit you at the same time. Like the craw space.

J don't think it'll work but could be worth a try. The wick action relies on evaporation, being the rope will be surrounded by soil it's unlikely to go any further than the imediate soil above the water table.

I've had great results using the gilmore soaker hose(fabric not recycled rubber) depending on the distance you can set them up on zones and run accordingly to keep the well pump from cycling alot.
Keeps the water at the base and effortless to hook up walk away and be watered within an hour or two

Interesting idea! Around here I'm lucky to be able to dig 8" without needing a pick axe, pry bars, and lots of swearing!

I can hit 40 inchs on a set of post hole diggers in 10 mins. Lots of clay but its starts about the 2 foot mark or about the time water starts filling in..
