The Reason I Have Always Called It "Clod" Computing

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.

One should always have an off-site backup, just not on or at a facility they don't have 100% control of.

The dang cloud is pretty good - better than a local machine, IMHO (not for all data, but for gmail, etc.)
I use google drive and if you install it right, it still works on your computer even when you are not online or it is down.

But how much has it been down....say, compared to how much the average users corrupts their hard drive, computer, etc. or gets their laptop stolen?

If I wasn't doing so much web stuff I'd buy a google chrome notebook in a flash.

I worship the cloud. But, yeah, I can see why a business with a good IT insider would not want to put their operations there.

I probably ought to get off of the MS rant. I feel a full blown tirade coming on.::P

All these years - decades now - I have lived with virtually not a single MS product.....it's truly amazing.

I tried to tell many of my friends and cohorts that they don't need a $200+ program to type a memo, nor a spreadsheet with tens of thousands of rows to keep a list of their vinyl record collection....

The most innovative stuff MS has done is in the video game biz....Kinect, Xbox, etc. - but the rest is often one giant hairball. I'm glad that era is over because we don't even need to have these discussions any longer except for a trip down memory lane.

There are some pretty impressive people working in the Kinect area at MSFT with some exciting vision about the future of computer/user interaction.

vision about the future of computer/user interaction.

If Windoz8 is any reflection of that - they need corrective lenses.

It is a very touchy subject when you have to deal with PCI compliancy (credit card stuff) and other stuff where a breach of data has MEGA implications.

I swear you pointy heads talk in binary. :)

I had to get help from the Internet people when my modem burned up. What kind of computer do you have sir... "uh.... it's black?"

mine is black & white;lol

Mine is silver and it is a custom white box system with additions.

ETA: It really needs to be replaced it is 9 years old, the CMOS battery doesn't hold its charge and doing a new kernel compile takes forever.

Local ISP kid called me one night when I had the servers running in the basement and the T1 to the house. I brokered telco gear and needed it for testing. Told him it was an ADC/Kingston DSU/CSU. He said "What is that?". ;lol I told him to go in the back room and they would show him one.

The floor of my woodshed in now made up of $113,000 worth of those units. Aluminum and won't rust.

Need any more csu/dsu? Full disclosure, these are plastic cases.

I still have a few of the ADC units on the shelf after finishing the wood shed. PSINET had a ton of them. Literally.
