Well Friday I had My hip Resurfaced ,I feel OK but the Doc said I can't lift anything over 40lbs for a year. I asked about Spliting Firewood and got the thumbs down " can't you just buy some " He asked well I guess I could Buy some but what are you getting:mad: As I sit in my house recouping I look at the pile and I think I can make it next year but the year after I will have to buy.

Wow, that sux! Sorry to hear this happened to you. But it's in your best interest to listen to the doc, and get that thing healed up proper. Maybe you can do some bartering or something this coming summer and fall, in turn for some processed firewood to keep your stocked up til the hip heals......either way, you'll make it through....

Listen to the doc now and be a little unhappy now . . . but much happier in the long run. Get well soon.

Thanks guys , I stinks cause Its something I love to do

Interesting. I've had both hips replaced. No physical therapy for either one. Only one restriction. No jogging or running. I remember the first one which was done in July. In September I was climbing trees. No problem.

This is a Resurface not a replace and I'm sure all doctors are different as far as restrictions. The day I went in he was doing 7 that day and from talking to the staff its non stop . As many as he's done I'm gona follow the instructions

the Doc said I can't lift anything over 40lbs for a year.

But the maul is only 6lbs.... ==c:p

Maybe time to go hydraulic? Even a small electric will get a lot of splitting done and you're not supposed to be lifting big rounds anyways right?

Best wishes to ya for a speedy recovery.

Pfft what does the Dr know?

They told me I'd never be able to walk normal again after I exploded my big toe in 2005.

They told me that pretty much doing anything other than laying on the couch was bad for my back. Guess what? Cutting wood all day actually feels better than doing nothing all day.

cant lift the rounds on the truck or on the spliting log. But its just a year I have plenty left Im only 43

I hadn't heard about hip resurfacing. Maybe it gives more time before the replacement?

On a side note, I had a minor toe procedure done last Thursday. Guess who's doing the snowblowing later today, and it's not me. I might take some video. :)

Edit: Just looked it up on the interweb. Looks awesome. As an older guy, I wonder if the resurfacing will be taking the place of the THP in the future for older people as well. Sounds like there are advantages if one is suited for it. Good luck, and follow the doc's instructions!

The thing I like about it was no restrictions on movements , cross legs , sleep on your side.... I think it will be better in the long run just the first year. The doc I saw took over 6 months to get a appointment with.

Yes, I knew that Jim. I'll be interested in how you make out with it. I had both hips x-rayed last summer and both look great. Didn't feel great though when I got bursitis in both sides...

Don't have to lift them, roll them up a ramp, roll them off the truck and split them with a hydraulic splitter vertical. Find a helper with a health body to bring along. I had surgery on my back in July of 2011 so I don't lift heavy rounds any more but roll a lot of big stuff and move them with a hand truck.

Well it's been 9 days since the operation and tomorrow I am returning to work . Hope I can make it at least half a day . I also have been looking for a hand truck/dolly to move rounds . I can't give up something I like!!

Chain saw weighs roughly 14 lbs.
You can surely get several cords bucked up & ready for splitting ; then:
Split vertical, no lifting ;)

Good luck with the re-hab :)

Got a Harbor Freight near you? They have a "big blue" handtruck that has big pneumatic tires on it they were advertising for about $45 or so. I have one and use it every single day. Works great for rolling around the yard.

we do have one near us and thats the one I was looking at. I'm thinking about this positive of how I can get it done.

I think even the splitting action would not be a good thing for a hip on the mend.
