In The Woods
The trails a little slick getting up top but with the chains it was fine. Tomorrow I'll spend the day cutting this downed Hemlock, looks like the limbing up will be a b_tch.

Do you ever feel like you won't be able to stop, and will end up in the brook (pic 6939)?
Only if the chains were off! Trout season opens April 1, we're getting our licenses this weekend so after work I can wet the line.

Gettin here, still areas in the woods that I can't make it through, I did some shoveling this morning when I just sunk up past the frame on the rhino.

Another week or two if this warmer weather holds, then I'm after some downed beech.

trout season? Your trount run early!

So does our season. We are lucky to have a stream or two that are year round.

looks good Zap. Early season starts today in the southeastern tier of PA.......I'll wait two more weeks, that's when it starts here. We've got some nice native streams in the mountains here, I'll try and make it out a couple times to get some for the skillet....those natives are the only ones I'll eat, the stocked trout are mushy and I'm not into mushy fish.

I'll take my youngest son with me on opening morning, and take all the kids to the sportsman club's big trout pond on that afternoon for a couple hours. They have a blast......but that's still two weeks away.....

Til then, I'll keep plugging away at the living room floor.

Zap have you ever looked up a tree species on the DEC forestry lists? They list "associated cover types" like common species found together. Like if you have beech it will say commonly found with say ironwood and hickory and hemlock. Or something. So looking at your woods what species do you find together?
Im sorry, Im a little south of you. Saratoga county. I think. Im just wondering about forest types.

Im sorry to interupt the fish conversation. I never heard that stocked fish tasted different. The local Ag colleges usually have their fish sales around the 1-2 of April. I asked a guy once why he loved the taste of trout so much and he said because, he thought they eat bugs.

Stocked fish (aka farm-raised) sit their entire lives in a holding tank, being fed pellet food. Then, in late winter/early spring, they are stocked into rivers and streams by the PA Fish and Boat commission, to be caught by opening day anglers.....those fish spend all their lives in a tank with no current to swim against, meaning they are not nearly as "in shape" as a wild fish, not to mention the fact that they don't eat natural food.....

Those "stockies", if they can make it through the opening season, will get exercise and after a while eating natural food from the stream, aren't so bad to keep and eat. But I will not keep fresh stocked fish. The meat is mushy. Trust me. Those fish are out of shape!

These are Brook Trout, when does your season start?
Our season begins April 1 too, but the trout are down in deep water, too cold in the streams where I love to Fly fish. It will not be until May if things warm up that they really become active in the streams and some of the higher elevation streams it will not be until June.

Good shoulder season stuff zap and for sure you don't want to get the cold shoulder...

I worked in Hemlock Haven today, had some beech, birch, cherry, maple, ironwood all mixed in.

Just some pics from todays work, three hemlocks (a chit load of limbing) two hemlocks had excellent wood but the third is iffy.

Pic 6958 is the iffy hemlock.

I'll try the small DR Chipper we have then use them on the trails, if the chipper won't handle them then maybe some fireplace action in the fall our when they lift the burn ban on burning.
