Thanks for the photos and clearing up the question about the secondaries. Only thing am still a little unclear about is the importance of the gasket. If it's not to seal the secondaries and my hunch was if they were coming out the back, it might mean less would be coming out the front and below, and whether that would be better or not?? In any event shouldn't be all that important.

So I see the photos on the rope gasket fashioned into baffle gasket -- can't see how the ends of the rope are connected, but I recall a description where you mentioned tying the strands into a knot, if that's correct, and I guess flattening down.

Any opinion to what happens without a gasket or a ripped gasket, downside of that?

And the photo of the thermoms, reminded me that the door does sit proud of the opening, so I actually do have room to put mine in the center over the door.

Only have about a weeks worth of wood left so just got a cord of wood from my wood guy -- they warned me it's not fully seasoned. He said August. But I probably should have asked when it was split -- and he reminded me he doesn't cover it from rain. I figured should be able to get some dry enough out of it --mm showed some less than 20% w/o re-splitting-- if I mix with what I have and maybe keep near the stove (safely) for a week shouldn't be too bad -- I'll find out anyway--too wet I just won't burn it.

Asked if the price was lower for not seasoned (it's been 225.) said no, then asked if I were to buy all my wood like 4 or 5 cords could he give me a better price. He said 175. if I give him a check (rather than CC). So I said okay, sounded good. Had looked through Craig's List a bit and recalled about that price for unseasoned delivered--dumped (but then of course you got to find someone who is going to play fair with how much in a cord and is reliable.

I'm not really committed, if his price were way out of line. So unless I could do MUCH better, I think I'll go ahead with him.

Picked up a load of pallets this afternoon (and some pallet scraps for burning--can mix that with the new wood for this season), and will start getting things ready. Have to stack the cord dumped in the driveway. Not sure am imagining my neighbors disapproval of the wood in the driveway and the pallets. I know several of them have inserts in their fireplaces, but don't notice anyone using them anymore. Back ten, fifteen years ago they were, but then didn't think it was worth it when you could heat for less than $1000 with oil or propane to go to all that effort to save a few hundred.

Now I seem to be the only one around here doing it. (btw the baffle is still 155::F, even with the door open for 2 hours!)

Is the house warm?

Crank that sucker up and open some windows. When I install a new stove or make a flue change, even in the summer, my wife always says 'Well, it is about to get real hot in this place.". ;lol

I think you walked in in the middle of the picture. ("Not THAT warm" meant it's not 155::F in here)

It's been fired up since Wednesday morning and has been nice and warm. Now it's taking a break in the warmer weather while I check out the baffle gasket, which btw is now even more messed up than last time I checked it. (Will have to order the new style gasket (or maybe try to fashion a Hogz mod gasket -- prolly should be able to pick up rope gasket at HD or Lowes if they keep any of them around year round).

Looks like won't need to fire up again until Monday night when it's going to drop back into the 30's again. But you got a point, am curious to see what's going to happen with the secondaries in the back now -- dunno if I can wait till Monday night.

My Hogz gasket is just rope gasket with about 3 inches or so extra added on both ends, then unraveled those 3 extra inches each side, and a strand from each end tied together. After tying a bunch of the loose strands together it comes together nice and tight and forms the single gasket. Then just formed around the channel tube, and baffle resting on top. Some leakage is not crucial. The main reason I can figure for the gasket is to keep most of the hot secondary air going into the baffler and out the secondary ports so that they do their job.
Burn and enjoy, try not to analyze so much, you will drive yourself batty. Been there done that when I first got mine.
$175.00 for cut & split wood delivered ain't too bad. You may be able to do better by watching craigslist and maybe finding local excavation companies or logging companies, and seeing what they have to offer. Tree companies may have something to offer also.

Yeah but it was a lot of fun.

Haven't gotten in touch with the dealer yet about the wrong gaskets. Not looking forward to it cause I also want to ask for touch up paint -- there were a few spots and the finish on the screen's metal frame came through pretty bad -- Pretty sure the new gaskets have to be more money than they were for the series A gaskets -- $2.50 each. Those have like 1/10 the gasket material. And looking at how long they last, I don't really want to buy more than one or two of them before I try your method. The regular gaskets, have to be replaced every time you take out the baffle. So with your mod I'd just make three pieces -- what you did for the center part, and then two other pieces of rope on the sides pushed against it to support the rear of the baffle like the original on mine.

Reason I got the screen was for starting up when you want the door open to get a new fire going. Of course you really shouldn't walk away, so at least with the screen, it's possible to do so for a few minutes -- still you need to set a timer to remind you to come back before it gets away from you. But that was with the Century -- with the Summit seems less of a need to leave the door open -- though cracking the door at times can get things moving fast when you want that.

Just want to let you know I appreciate all the help.

Enjoy. Help is why we are all here, and helping is why we stay.
