Just spoke to my brother in Bellingham WA. He is a builder--built his own house. Turns out he has a 10-year-old Vista and he loves it. And.....he wishes he had gotten the larger size! He has a two floor house that is essentially completely open--like having a large loft. That pretty much clinches it.
Good clinch !

Does this mean my DW is radiant?
I *think* I've seen the DW described as convective heaters, but I don't know much about these stoves. Someone like Ray, who has had a DW, will be able to tell you. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I just mentioned it as a distinction between the Alderlea and the Jøtul. No stove is 100% one way or the other. My stove is described as radiant, but a whole lot of hot air comes up the stairwell from the stove room.;)

. . .the T4 will be a pain to get wood into.
Bingo!
. . .he wishes he had gotten the larger size!
Well, you know how men are. . .;lol
But seriously, it's also nice to have a lil' more stove capacity when you need it. Some folks choose a smaller stove knowing that they will have to supplement with the furnace sometimes, but when the Nor'easter comes, and the power is out, and the furnace is not an option. . .the T5 will get the job done without reloading every 2 hours, like the T4 would probably require.

. . .I visited a dealer yesterday who will sell me his T5 floor model for $500 less (under $2000). Hard to pass up.
Just do it. That is a great price. . .
+1
I'd be all over that.
However, if the stove has been burned in, I would ask the vendor to guarantee in writing that this particular stove will qualify for the Mass voucher. Mass may not view a demo stove as "new," and not accept it for the program. When I got my stove, a fed tax credit was available on new stoves. One of the mfr's on here posted that their refurbs did not qualify, because the IRS did not see them as "new." Later, Woodstock said that their refurbs qualified, because they were reconditioned by the original mfr. . .
This stuff can be tricky. You don't want to save $500 and then not get the $1,000. I'm not saying to ask the vendor to guarantee that you will get the $1,000, just that the stove they sell you qualifies.(Mass might run out of $ or whatever.)

. . .I wouldn't worry about the weight either. It is distributed nicely over several joists by the hearth pad.
I think she intends to go without a pad, BG.
Maybe ask BuilderBro about it, if he is familiar with your house. . .

It would be nice to get the stove in soon enough to at least try it--it will be too warm soon.
Perfect weather for burn-in fires. . .you can open the windows to let the paint fumes out.:)

OK!! I am beginning to get a headache from thinking about all of this---
But it's a good kind of ache, right?;lol

That means you're learnin'! Keeps your brain young!

Stick around. There's always more to learn, like this:

. . .Switch to softwood in mild weather and you will have lots of control over the heat output.
If you think the brain cells are cookin' now, just wait til the eggheads start posting heat transfer equations!==c

If you want to look at Lopi stoves, Chelmsford Fireplace (Chelmsford) and Energy Unlimited (Wayland). Both will barter on pricing and you should be able to get at least 500 off from any dealer in this area without having to buy a floor model. At least that has been my experience with two purchases in the past two years.

As mentioned in earlier post, I had pretty much made up my mind for the T5.... BUT I was visiting a friend in Wayland today and just could not resist stopping at Energy Unlimited as I had not seen the Lopis yet. The owner, John, just about convinced me to change my mind. The 1750 and the Endeavor seem just my size. And they don't require a hearth pad and are a little less weight than the T5. The only thing is they were nervous about being able to do the trade-in by May 22 because they have to order the stove whereas the the T5 dealer has the stove on site.

Any opinions on the Lopi vs. T5. Otherwise it will probably come down to logistics.

No opinion on either. I just happen to have recently visited both stores and both negotiated pricing. I liked the Chelmsford store better simply because their sales person was very knowledgeable and emphasized much of what you read on here repetitively. he was willing to have the install performed to my specifications rather than trying to sway me in any direction as though I hadn't done research on all of this. In the end, you have to make the decision that is best for your situation and the less sales shtick you have to wade through, the better. Good luck with your purchase!

I'd agree that ~20% off shouldn't be too hard to come by during the off season, but in 2010 when the 30% tax credit was available, there were a few posts saying that dealers didn't seem to be discounting much. Apparently, business was brisk due to the tax incentive, and they didn't feel the need to offer discounts. Sounds like the Mass program may not be available to as many people, so it may not have a similar effect. Dunno, just something to think about. If it hasn't been burned in(?), I don't see much difference in a floor model and one from the warehouse. . .maybe make sure the door latch hasn't been abused. OTOH, you could always ask for, say, $750 off, especially if you find a good deal on a Lopi or something else that you think you would like as well as the T5.

The PE dealer said that the stove was ordered by someone else and they changed their mind. He put it on the floor rather than store it. This was two weeks ago. He was willing to lower the price because he already has a floor model in a different color. So it is essentially new and unused. So I am thinking that since the Lopi dealer was so nervous about the tight time frame for the trade-in that he will make me nervous over the next month of this process whereas the PE dealer was very laid back about the whole thing. No worries and the stove is on the floor ready to go. A bird in the hand....

I think you'll be happy with the T5. I read lots more raves about it than the Endeavor. I really like the baffle in the PE versus tubes.

He can still get a $300 energy credit, no or did that expire?

Yeah, I would guess your DW goes about 400 lbs. or a little over. My 2460 is 380, I believe. If the construction is similar, It has an opening above the fire box where convective air comes out from the back and top, and the sides are single-layer cast, and radiant. I think you'll love the T5 (have you got it installed yet, or were they closed today?) ;lol

I have to get a permit before it can be installed and i would like to be here when they install it so we have to find a mutually agreeable time. Hopefully in the next week or two.:)

I have no idea where that little face came from. I did not put it there. I don't actually know where to find those faces.

!!! is three exclamation points. If your posting from an android device, you probably won't see the smiley menu. Not sure about iPad.

There is a bunch of stuff in the New Forum forum (!!!)

Hey a new way for me to spend my extra time--but seriously maybe I can figure out how not to quote twice in my replies!

No. Stack more wood. ==c
Ha ha--unfortunately where I am in the deep suburbs I have to order wood . However, I just discovered a new source--he has two year old wood and it is cheaper than what I got in the past. I have seen where he keeps it--a bit out in the country from me and it looks good. So when I get it delivered I will be stacking.

Get it now and order as much as you can fit on the property. Good deals often are gone the next time you look for them.

....
the pipe is 20" from the half wall so I don't have much choice on the back. ...

Not sure about the Fireview, but the progress hybrid, with heat shield , requires 6 inch rear clearance.. this might gain you some room if the fireview has an equivalent shield
