Feeling the Heat

Grabbed a split out of the wood pile and remembered which tree it came from?

I had that happen to me today. I must have the fever:eek:

all the time. I've only got one apple tree in the stacks :)

yes, I was telling my wife this weekend about some maple we were using this weekend and told her that it came from a CL score and how nice the old man who posted was. I actually sent him a thank you email and he replied today. sweet older gentleman, talked to me the whole time i was splitting, event got me a bottle of water while i was splitting. Heating with wood goes far beyond the heat we get from it, its the relationships that are being created, at least for me. LOL.

Yes I can because a lot of my wood has to be CARRIED through the woods or up over a hill to the truck. Very hard to forget wood that you really have to work hard to get but I don't complain much because its good exercise and wonderful heat:mad:==c

I have thought about such things all winter. I have been burning old dead barkless locust for my overnight burns. I got into a small patch of woods 2 years ago on the farm where I cut most of my wood. This patch of woods was bordered by a small stream and a low wet area off to one side so I really had never ventured into it before. The stream was down during a dry spell once so I took a walk and it was like a prospector finding a new vein. The only catch was I could only get to it by driving quite a distance through a large corn field so it limited my access because it also had to be dry enough. Once I was able to get there I hit it hard. Wish I could come across another one like that.

Been there done that and have almost worn a wheelbarrow out too. But I am like you it's good exercise and I think to myself as I am puffing hard......this will sure give off some good heat in the middle of January.

All the time. For some of my wood that came from my property, I'll use a sharpie to write the date on it. But even other wood can be ID'd sometimes. For example, I got some birch last year and it was the only birch I have. I know where it's from.

always remember when it was a particularly exciting wood hoard or if it was extra hard work gathering and splitting!....the feeling of burning wood that you had to work hard for!

Many times I'll recognize the wood and recall where the tree was and even the day it was cut.

I can usually recall where the tree came from and how I came across it. Always brings back fond memories of the CSS process to get to where we can burn it.

Yes but I'll never admit it openly :)
Some folks may think I'm nuts ;)

I don't think you need to worry about that on here Bogy.....your in good company. It not just everywhere you can sit around and talk about getting wood. :p

My wife complains that I spend my time in forums talking about wood and meat (other forum is smoking meat)

Yep. Likewise, though I only read the various forums for smoking meat. College football and basketball though....

well, that and home improvements, renewable/green energy.

You know you're a firewood hoarder when...

You save your kids popsicile sticks for kindling?

I have some dead standing oak that got mixed into a couple of my stacks. Was hard as a rock. Turned the cutters on my chain blue. The wood never turned grey or cracked. Every now and then I come across one.

I save popsicle sticks for plant seedling markers.
I save wine corks, too. Jars and jars of them Some day I will split some and make a miniature model of BS's stacks.

Yeah, I started saving them 2 years ago, I figure by next fall they should be ready

Sometimes I remember, and sometimes I only think I remember and later it turns out I was wrong.

When you split by hand some of the pieces of wood are even memorable.
You know that beautiful squared off piece, usually red oak that is just right
out of the center. Like a fine piece of beef. Now who sounds nuts?!

I could tell you where every stick of wood came from out of my 11 cords. I mark each row with date stacked, what kind of wood it is and occasionally where it came from.
