The Wood Game Starts again

Well i got a couple good scores about 300 yards up the road. The first i paid 100.00 for the ash tree to the trimming company. The second i cut out the middle man and i got the maple for free and i am going to plow her driveway this winter with my kubota.

I also bought a used Huskey 272 saw (a little help from heaterman) to help cut up some of the big stuff my poor little echo CS-400 the wife bought for me is just not happy cutting up the large trunks. (It does run much better with all the EPA stuff taken off and the carb adjusted a little richer)

Once the tax money comes back from the electric car i am going to get a new Huskey 28ton to help with the big logs.

I moved most of the wood with the wifes BX1850.

That stuff looks perfect...not like the downers I often get. I don't know your prices there but I could get a split cord here for about $125...wouldn't be all White Ash though. Burns great!

I posted in another thread that I hadn't really see dark heartwood on the Ash I've cut here; Well that there is pretty dark!

Good score, I don't ever seem to come across any ash around here. I mostly settle for all the oaks, black locust and mulberry.

Honestly I wish I could get my hands on some ash, it would be nice to split one year and burn the next. I did get some red maple last year that I am burning now but it is not worth it for all the ashes it leaves behind.

Good for you getting the wood. Nice trade there; firewood for plowing snow. Helps both of you.

I would question the 28 ton splitter. You might be happier and save many dollars by going with the 22 ton. We have a 20 ton and it splits all we need. It is now over 20 years old and I started it today. First time it has run since last April. Still going strong.

Got to love ash!! About 90% of my stacks are ash and the future looks to be more of the same. I am trying to hoard some oak as much as I can now that I am 4yrs ahead but only have one cord so far.

looks like an old splitter in the background is the potential upgrade an issue with the engine/leaky hydraulics?

Otherwise if its working correctly run it till dies and then we'll(In the gear forum) steer you in the direction of repair or upgraded motor&hydros

The old one in the back ground belongs to a guy that use to live across the street. It is not in the best of shape need some tlc he is trying to sell it for 500.00. So i was going to get one for the back of the kubota but then i decided i use the bucket way to much to help load some of the big rounds so i think i am going to get the 28ton mostly because of the honda motor on it.

You do make a good point about the 22ton it is a little cheaper i just did not know how well it was going to do vs the elm i end up with sometimes.

One thing i did notice is the speedco 35 ton is 1700.00 with free shipping and TLC has the same thing for 2000.00 i wonder if they will price match. I really would rather have the honda motor then the BS just because i have ran honda motors for years and they never seem to give up i just hope the new ones are as good as the old ones.

We've probably split close to 50 cord of elm with the 20 ton. The honda motors are good but not that much better to pay an additional $700 for one. You can buy a new Honda engine off the Internet for less that that. So you could run the motor which comes on it until it peters out then switch to the Honda and be well ahead of the game.

+1 on the 20 ton being plenty. Did a few cord this year of elm and it worked great

Like many others will say the TSC Huskee is a great splitter for the price. Not the best splitter money can buy but will get the job done well and goes vertical. I've only had 1 round I couldn't split with it and that was a 40+ inch pin oak round that consisted of a knotty twisted mess of three trunks. That one I mad one little cut to help it along and it split the rest.

Well i will get some pictures of the truck off this maple it was a large tree. But some picture from this weekend. I picked up a used Husky 272XP i really like the power this saw has over my little echo CS-400.

I would not like to move all this wood without a Kubota i will say that.
