Does it smell like chit ??

Split a piece if you can.
If the opposite end opens up in a zig-zag you have what appears to be black gum

Red elm is pretty good firewood once seasoned.
I burnt some this winter. How much do you have?

I just finished splitting 2 red elms with positive identification. The wood from these trees was very heavy and the same exact color of yours. but my trees had 2-3 sap rings. More white sapwood than what Im seeing. And the bark on yours is totally off.
Being elm the bark on my trees were dark gray and the tops of the ridges were zig zagy and formed distinct criss crossed intersecting diamonds.
I will allow for digital camera inaccuracy with respect to color of bark but the ridges on your tree are uninterupted. I dont recall where you are located, Im in NY and maybe if you are further west your trees may vary.
It looks like Red Elm...but....
Two positive ways to identify this wood is the chevron patterns of the ring pores on the butt end of the logs. You might need a jewelers loup to see them and the slimey inner bark if you peel the bark from a limb and soak it in water. You will get clear snot. Like Aloe Vera juice.

Around a cord.

It was confusing me too. I had another load of red elm from a different source and side by side they looked different, but once split they both had the very deep red color heartwood that dissapears to a light brown in 30 minutes. The bark was slimey on both too.
