Long story short, bladder stones, again.

Surgery was today. 3 the size of a BB pellet, and the rest of the bladder full of stones. Plus a hematoma on his spleen, that was removed, and sent for biopsy (vet thinks it's negative, most definatley).

Vet said "he's 4 1/2, shouldn't have these issues".Also said he's coming along fine, groggy this PM, but OK.

Shooting for a Saturday AM pick up from the vet, I'm home all weekend.

Sorry to hear he's going through it, but glad to hear he's doing ok at this point!

You just never know what you will be confronted with while caring for your loved pets. Hope he recovers comfortably.

The next question: Is there anything that can be done as maintenance (change in diet or something) that can prevent you and him from going through this again?

That is a very good question, and I understand special diets are prescribed for dogs with stone problems. I wonder about water, but being on LI, I wouldn't suspect the water is particularly "hard".

Poor little guy, hope all turns out well Dix.

I put a cap full of ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar in my dogs drinking water every other day,,, chickens get it too.. I use Braggs brand.. Wishing Murphles a quick and full recovery!

Poor puppy . . . hope he comes home soon.

Thanks. He's home, I picked him up tonight. He was doing well enough that they saw no reason for him to stay.

He's very tired. Shaved belly & all.

Waiting results on the stones to see how best to prevent their return. Special food for now.

I did read about the water, which is very hard here on the Island. He'll be getting bottled from now on.

One of the vets I used to go to had me put a bit of Cranberry juice in with the water. Dog had a bladder infection that lasted close to 2 years. Prior vets did everything to try and figure it out.. had probably $3000+ in bills :eek:

drips of Blood and puss would come out. Went to the cranberry juice vet, prescribed some $$ pills (like 3$ a pill and I had to give them 2x a day for a month) and problem solved.

Dixie eyed shuffle, if your water is very hard, would be a wise investment to get a water softener. Hard water will slowly destroy everything that uses water (washing machine, dishwasher, toilets, valves in the sink spigots, boiler, etc, etc.)

Bottled water is frequently filtered tap water. You can probably get a mineralogical analysis from the company you get the water from. Once the stones are analyzed, you might have a better idea on what to avoid. Best wishes with everything.

Cody (10 y/o Yorkie) had Bladder Stones a little over a year ago....just couldn't pee one night (first time I ever heard a dog say "OWWWWW"), took him to the Vet the next morning and found stones. It took a couple days for him to get back in the swing of things, he is on a special diet of Hills Perscription Diet G/D.....we tried others...K/D....I/D, but had a hard time holding it down. He absolutely loves his new food, and has been fine since the surgery.....we had him in a few months ago for an issue with his paw, and had an x-ray done to check for any stones developing, and he is clear.....new food, and plenty of water seems to be the trick for him

That's good to know, thank you.

Looks good.

He's a trooper, for sure !

We think dogs are so tough, but they get sick and have pain just as we do. They just are at your mercy to know how to "listen" to your pet and be alert enough to do something about it just as you would for any other family member. Glad you friend got help and is improved.

Glad to hear your dog is better! Ask your vet about going to a grain free dry food and adding vitamin c to his diet. We switched to Fromm's grain free Surf & Turf and my dogs have never been better. Plus, the shedding almost stopped and their coats are so much softer, not to mention the reduction of gassy dogs and sensitive stomach issues.

A woman I work with had both her dog and cat have recent problems with bladder stones, ended up being high calcium water, worth checking that too.

Good luck! What a great lookin' dog :)

For over 20 years we've made our dogs food from basically some books on feeding your dogs a homemade diet and common sense in what they need.. My Shepard mix is 16 years old and my one Jack Russell is 14 and Benny the new guy is just a year.. They get raw marrow bones too , usually from locally raised beef.. I wouldn't want my dogs eating the bones from the grocery stores, that marrow has to be loaded with medications, growth hormones and whatever else.. I save a lot of venison bones... My small JR found a nice foot long back bone section from a deer that the Coyotes had in the middle of my one hay field,, you could see their prints in the snow that they had been chasing each other trying to steal the bone... My dogs also get bone meal with their raw meat or slightly cooked, in the form of eggs shells ground up that we save from our free range chickens.. A dog needs calcium along with meat as they would get in the wild eating the meat and bones,, I also add a whole food vitamin to the powder mix.. They also get a vegetable for roughage to simulate the fur of the animal that they would have consumed along with the meat... I also give them krill oil as well.. They have never had coat problems as well.. There are plenty of books on feeding your dogs yourself.. I know what my best friends are eating,,, makes me feel great and I can tell you my cat and three dogs know what your doing for them when your putting their food together,,, a great feeling if you love your pets...Anything happens, you know you did the best you could... You can even make up bulk and freeze it as well.. We do that if we go away and people have to watch our dogs.. We just mark the portions in individual freezer bags.. Let them sit out overnight so they are ready for their morning feeding.. It's very easy to just feed out of a bag,, what ever works.... We have just chose not to....
