Well came home monday night to find some dirt bag broke into my shop and cleaned out all of my saws and my power tools:mad:. I was so pissed i could hardly talk to the sheriff officer. He said this was the fifth shop that had been broken into in the last month around my area. They got my MS 170, 015 and my 028 super which was the worst because it used to be my dads. I called insurance and since they are older saws i need to find out what current models would be equal replacement. Going to shop tomorrow but would like a little real world advice from people that use saws. What would you guys recommend as a replacement for the 028? Size and power is ok for 80% of what i cut and i would like to stay with stihl and pro saws if that helps.
Thanks everyone.

Well, if they are asking you to name current model replacements I'd have to say 170 = ms171, 015 = ms201 and the 028 = ms362. I'd get a quote for all three and send it to your adjuster. And then go buy a 171 or 180 and a 261 or 362 with the settlement check.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Thieves suck.

192t,362,660..............;)
I was trying for some (slightly skewed) sense of reality, but hey doesn't hurt to try.

I know when I do fire restoration or storm damage jobs for insurance companies the numbers that the adjusters come up with are astronomically high. So the OP ought to be able to at least replace his three saws with two brand new ones. And the 015 and 028 were white handled pro saws. So he should get pro saw quotes for replacement values.

170 is a 30 cc
015 -- 32 cc
028 -- 47 cc

New MS261 would be a great all around saw ;)

What did your 015 look like? The top saw or the bottom one?

The 015 wasn't a "pro" saw - Most comparable to teh MS192(T) today.

The MS170 is still a current model.
The 028 Super is most comparable to an MS291 today.

If I were listing replacement models for insurance purposes it would be:

MS171, MS192T, and the MS261.

The others have covered the replacement saws pretty well . I just wanted to say that I hope you get things worked out in a satisfactory( to you) manner . I know that nothing will replace that 028, as it had real value in that it was your Dads saw . There should be a special place in the beyond for thieves .
All the best , John

I think you are missing the point. Besides the 192 is a heavier and less powerful saw then the 015. When in doubt always round up. I'd also argue to the insurance company that the 028 had "pro" style split crankcase vs the "homeowner" clam shell design of the 291. Clearly the closest comparable saw would be the 261 (or 362, remember to roundup :))

I know I'd rather start off with 80% of a 201 and 362 then a 192/291. The adjuster will be reasonable if you can state your case clearly. And probably knows next to nothing about chainsaws.

The bottom pic is like the one i had.
The dealer pretty much said MS170 which is current, the MS192T and the MS261 for replacements. I was currently saving for the MS362 so i will more then likely take that money and add to what i get from insurance for the 028 and get it.
I had just ordered new chains for the 028 and they came in today but the dealer said he would exchange them if i purchased something that they wouldnt fit.

Sorry to hear you were ripped off. Time for a security system. You can throw a "24hr video surveillance" sign up and even a dummy camera or two. Most thieves won't call your bluff. You can also get the system I have, just don't leave the dog bones out, they will help carry anything they want if you give them a few. Also post a description on area craigs lists in case they try to pawn them or sell on line.

I hate stuff like this. If you have an insurance policy that gives you brand new replacement items, that would be awesome. Most will only pay out whatever the current FMV was of what was stolen, which sucks. When that happens, a person usually has to come out of pocket to replace stuff that was working just fine. Kind of like auto insurance. If my Taurus is involved in a fender bender, it would be totaled for anything more than $1k. Thing is, that car is worth years and years of travel to me just the way it is.

I hope they catch the thieves, put them in prison, and make them do hard labor while in prison. Maybe cut down trees, split them, and drop the firewood off at your house.

I am finding it harder and harder to follow the white handle = pro version rules anymore. They have black handles, orange handles, and even white handles on crap homeowner saws now.

To be fair, that 028 never was any better than a 261.
