Gotta say large cherry is a real PIA! My 5T electric splitter had a rough time with 10+" diameter freshly cut cherry! This was a large cherry that uprooted during the blizzard .. The main trunk will remain there as it is too much for the saw and my back and has to be at least 24".. This branched out to 2 -10" trunks and I figure I got around 1/2 cord more from this tree so all totaled I added 3 cord of cherry and red oak between winter and now and I am tired! Cherry fought the splitting every inch of the way but I won the battle ;)

Hey I know what you mean, TIRED! I hauled and bucked close to 4 cord in the last week and I'm tired too!

How high is that stack ya got there? I'm looking out my window and counting the end row I'm 14 splits high, looks like yours is 17 or maybe 18 high :)

I can understand that, I'll stack & cut through the end of May.

LOL that stack is close to 7' high but I will level it off to the right once I get the last load of locust delivered.. It's that high in the wood shelter too but that should be fine..

Stacking is much easier for me.. Cutting and lifting 75 lb. chunks of wood and placing and removing them from the truck is brutal..

Water was running out of this cherry when I was splitting it.. I am sure this is why it was so damned heavy! Red Oak is heavy but splits SO much easier!

Ha! I moved 7 truckloads, power line tree trimming. Had to throw it up a bank to road level, around 5 or 6 ft., then load it on the truck! Cherry, Elm, Mulberry, Walnut, Ash, and Boxelder. The Elm was the heaviest, Cherry came in 2nd :) Springtime, water's movin' up, stuff's heavy as it get I suppose :p

You must've got a gnarley cherry.
I don't remember it splitting that difficult.
Never split any that wet though.

Good BTUs & smells nice.

I have heard of others struggling with cherry, but the cherry I get I generally split by had because of how easy it is. odd.

I ran into the same problem a month ago. As the pieces split it's easy to see why it was so difficult; the grain is twisted and wavy and dimpled together, and surprisingly stringy; my Fiskars just bounces off any round bigger than 12" or so. I don't know what the initial MC was, but I weighed one small split (4x3x14) when I got the wood and have been re-weighing it periodically since then. In one month that little split has lost 19 ounces of water weight -- almost 2.5 cups! And that's despite the fact that the wood had been down and bucked for several weeks before I even got to it.

Nice! I never pass on Cherry. I added about half a cord to the stack a couple weeks ago. It's stacked single-row so we'll see how dry it can get by this fall...
But yeah, I see some wavy grain in some of those pieces and that means tough splitting.
Speaking of wet, I'm getting a Red Oak this week that blew down, 'green' wood. Gotta be careful I don't pop a spleen on that wet stuff...

Not bad considering what I did all day yesterday.. I have lost 11 lbs. since I started stacking, cutting, splitting and stacking again lol..

Yes it's wavy stuff for sure and stringy too.. If it is 8" and under it's much easier to deal with..Red oak while heavy splits nicely unless you get a gnarly piece.. The red oak I got this winter split up pretty good compared to cherry of the same diameter and 8"-10" splits pretty good with a maul which I did on the larger rounds to make it easier to handle.. Hopefully your spleen won't explode with the oak ;)

Please let me know when you've finished Ray. We still have plenty to do and your help would be appreciated.

I knew you would Ray. We'll get it done though; just not as fast as normal.

I'm gonna send Pete there and he can do his and my share if that's OK with you ;)

Ray
Plus I work harder than Pete so he's gonna have to bust ass for me lol then he can do normal lazy ass work for himself haha..

Ray

But maybe you require more beer?
