These spalted maple chunks did not make it into the firepit at a friends house last night. One unfortunately did. I already have plans to work these up. The top chunk is tapered, so it will be cut and turned on the lathe. The two large ones on the right are pretty hefty. Being stacked under a porch all winter saved them. The smaller ones were still on the stump and overwintered exposed making them softer and further advanced in the rot stage, so those will be questionable.

Jon I have some cherry burls do you do anything with those? Seems they are pretty common at least here they are common..

Sure do Ray. Here is my carved cherry burl snail. I'm definitely interested. I think we are going to the Cape this summer, so maybe we can make some arrangement. I'll PM you at some point.

Love the snail Jon! All the cherry trees get burls here from insects I think..Not sure what I did with the burly pieces didn't save though..

Cherry burl makes great knife handes if you can find enough solid wood. If they are not perfectly solid I fill the voids with epoxy and sometimes saw dust.

That must be nice. I stay away from the centers if they are hollow. I will work a burl split or quartered. Crazy grain goes everywhere.
 
I see lots of nice trees cut & stacked for firewood.
Every time I wish I could have the lumber up here. LOL.

Nice salvage ;)
