Driving to work I saw a cardboard sign "Free Wood" and made the quick decision to stop and see what it was about. Older gentleman was raking and said "sure - you can have it, just drive on over the front yard there and load it up" as he pointed to a few piles of branches that had been cut and stacked.

Now, I wouldn't normally get all that interested in such small wood (it was twig up to 4-5" max, most in the 1-3" diameter) but it was stacked neatly, each piece cut to about the same length (didn't measure, but it looked about right for the stove). By time I loaded it all up, the 8' bed of the truck was full (tossed in, not stacked neatly... was on way to work at the time).

We chatted a bit as I loaded and was a pleasant time, all of 15 minutes perhaps to do it. He then asked for my number so that he could call me when he has more - apparently he plans to take down an apple tree in his yard soon. That could be interesting as it looks to be quite tall, but the trunk doesn't look too even.

So, now I think I have my kindling for next year - just have to find a good place to stack it.

nice man, but theres no pics !!!

Nice Slow. The apple can be great but don't expect a lot of straight sections. lol Still, get all you can and put those kids to work unloading the wood too! Tell them Dennis and Judy said so.

stopped on a whim, got some good smaller wood, met a nice fellow and got lined up for some delicious apple wood! I'd say it just kept getting better and better on that scrounge......

That applewood would be put aside for cooking on the firepit at this house!!

I did put the kids to work - they did a pretty good job of stacking these sticks. I picked a spot under the deck stairs as really I expect this will be burned as kindling for the firepit this summer for the most part. Pretty small stuff. Funny how once stacked neatly the volume went WAY down, looked more impressive in the truck but I didn't take a picture before unloading.

I think the value of meeting that gentleman was worth more than the wood. Listening to him explain how when he was growing up (one of 10 siblings) he had to bring water to the house in a bucket and they collected rainwater too. What a change in the world he has seen. I am tempted to show up there with the kids to rake leaves or something just so the kids can hear his stories and gain a new perspective on life.

That stuff will burn really nice in that Progress too. Glad the kids were involved.
