Northern MI - in the mitten
Just a little excitement I thought I'd share from early this afternoon.
So, I'm out having a fire in the pit this afternoon. Mom's sitting in a chair and we're talking about how goofy the lab is, and my next door neighbor starts yelling across the power line field.
I had noticed some smoke from her property for a bit and thought she was doing the same as us. Well, she was, until the fire got away from her and caught the grass on fire next to the hole dug in the ground she was calling a fire pit.
I went running over (no easy task any more) and she hadn't hooked up the hose and was in a panic about the fire and couldn't do it, so I did. By this time, the fire had spread to about 50' around and was moving pretty quick. It was headed to my tree line.
The hose didn't reach far enough, so she finally made "the call" while I put out what I could.
DNR and local fire crew were already on another call close by and showed up in less than 5 minutes.
She hadn't cleared around the pit, and didn't have the hose ready and she started burning after the winds began. 3 strikes.
She ended up getting a citation for allowing the fire to get out of control, and got a warning for no burn permit on a "no burn" day. Don't know what the cost will be.
If only she'd had the hose at the ready, the fire could have been contained in less than a minute.

Good for 2013 - Dec 2015

Lots of areas have the snow melted off & lots of dry areas.
Be fire season soon.

Burn Permit for here? That's the first time I have ever heard of that! They can kiss my ass if they think I'm going to pay so I can have a fire on my land!

The same way I refuse to pay to have my dog registered.

Yes
Free & easy. o_O

Here in Maine it is much better to get a burn permit . . . than to not get a burn permit and have the fire get away from you. In the first case, you may be lucky and get away with a warning. In the second case, they may warn you or go right to the fine and charges for fire suppression costs.

Glad to hear no major consequences for her poor choices.

Being prepared matters!
