We live in N Attleboro, MA and will be using our 2 pellet stoves to heat next fall. We have an FS Enviro Empress and a Harman Accentra insert.

It appears what pellets box stores carry varies by area.

Wondering for those of you who live in my area, what brands of Pellets did you find at Home Depot, Lowes or Tractor Supply this past year? Which did you like best? What were bad?

We plan to order some pellets from South Shore Pellets. We have only burned about 15 bags since having our stove installed.

Used okies from South Shore Wood Pellet from a couple of years ago. Also used Premium wood pellets (Maine wood pellets) from TSC in Taunton. Kirley Masonry in Mansfield carried a few different brands as well including black hills (okies) this year. Ferestien in Foxboro carried LG's @ $260 a ton like they do just about every year. You have lots of choices in this area. I have 2 tons Green Team on standby for next year and 2 tons stove chow which I bought from Lowes and HD. Check each store because they do vary from store to store.

Around here buying pellets from one of the big box places is a recipe for disaster. Both the TSC store and HD store them outside. In the rain. In the snow. Quality is highly variable depending on how fresh the pellets are and moisture content can be a real problem. I try to steer everyone I come in contact with toward smaller stores that actually have an idea of how to store and protect the fuel their customers are buying. Right now you can premium quality pellets for $175 a ton at my brothers hardware store.

Some of the pellets shops around here store them outside.

I haven't heard of Ferestien before. I'll check them out as they are close to me.

Kirley is doing Maine Wood for $250 and New England for $265. He may get Oakies and Turman in the 300-305 range but only if there is enough interest before end of May.

Do you prefer Green Team or Stove Chow?

Fernsteins has Granules LG for $279/ton with lowest delivery cost I have seen around.

Southshore Pellets has
LeCrete $272.50/ton
Ambiance $269/259
Logik-e Super Premium Wood Pellet $254
Maine Wood 239/229 Okanagan Pellets $282
Barefoots $266

We think we may buy a combination of LeCrete, Maine Wood, Okanagan, and Barefoots to see what our stoves like and learn next winter. Is it obvious I have a hard time making up my mind.

Heaterman: I wish local places has pricing like at your brother's hardware store. Is his shop in MI?

They are both about the same. Shoulder season pellets at best with high ash. Heat is okay on both. They were cheap enough at the time and that's why I have them. As far as outside storage of pellets goes, the sad fact is most pellet manufactures store pellets outside at some point.

Trimom,
You may already know this, but in our area...Nattle Lowes, Plainville Lowes, and Sattle Depot, there is little choice.
Inferno (junk) Fireside ultra (just ok) Green Supreme (rebagged New Englad WP) and if you're lucky Green Team (pretty good).

If you are willing to venture out a bit there are several places within 30-45 min that have better selections of truely hot pellets (albeit more expensive)
I am in S. Attle and run into the same issue, but choose to travel to CT for my Somersets.

Where in CT do you go for Somersets? Do you call ahead or do you know they always have them?

thanks!

Sorry ETA;

They sometimes run out, but will put you on the list for when they take delivery.

I gotta say that I feel sorry for you guys because of the prices you are paying for pellets. I'm going to risk making you feel bad but here in Michigan pellets were under $200/ton for premium hardwood pellets all winter and right now you can buy top notch product for $165-$175 a ton.

part of the problem is getting the pellets to New England....shipping is shockingly expensive to the dealers.....cheapest shipping cost we have is about $20/ton, and that's from a mill 65 miles away.......pellets 9and coal) from Virginia or PA are $50-$60/ton, and shipping on pellets from western USA or Canada can run upwards of $90-$100/ton! One of the problems is that while folks bring a lot of loads INTO the Northeast, there's really aren't a lot of backhaul loads for the truckers OUT of the Northeast, so, they charge more to come here, knowing that its good possibility they will be coming back bobtailed or empty (no income).

All the research in the world and all the "reviews" that you find will not come close to telling you what pellets are best for you as accurately as the way you are doing it. I tell many customers every day to do exactly what you are doing. Mix it up and see what works best for you! I like your style.

Theres some decent pellets in the northeast sub $200 at the big box stores. Come in with your 10% off coupon you got on ebay for a couple bucks and you can get a decent pellet for $175-$185. We don't have Menard's though which they seem to actually put pellets on sale and offer some of their weird 12% rebate sales.

well, there WERE pellets available sub $200 when the big boxes had them....now we only have to wonder what late summer/fall will bring.....

Mr. Warm politely emailed in to say that dealers who may have stopped carrying okies last year (cause they couldn't get them) should be able to have all the pellets they could want or need this year now that the the Upton bagging plant thingy has been sorted out.
