Being new to pellet stoves, I'm not sure why mine occasionally makes a deep "thrumming" noise...could it be the sawdust from the pellets? I use Olympus Ultrapremium (Doug fir). thanx everybody!

Welcome. Post your stove type in you signature. You will get more responses that way. When does the noise start and stop? (What part of the cycle?)

Is the noise coming from the stove at start up? Shut down? Normal operation?

From a motor? From the auger? Is it consistent? Is it the fire rumbling?

Lots more info needed. It can be a number of things.

Welcome to the Forums. :)

Doubt "saw dust" has anything to do with it, unless your stove hopper is full of fines. In any event, we can't do much to help unless we know what make & model stove you have, as mralias states above.

My 25-PDVC does the same thing. Don't know why or what causes it.

There is a thread that Mike H. responded to sometime back. He said if you cover about 1/2 of the air inlet with duct tape, it stops a "drumming" sound in the PDVC. Small adjustments of adding or removing thin strips can "fine tune" the fix. Might be worth a shot.

Hi everyone...thanx for your input on the noise problem. We have a Heatilator ECO-ADV-PS50. The noise occurs only occasionally, and only when the augur is feeding pellets. We have cleaned the stove on a weekly basis since fall of 2012, and also VERY thouroughly twice (I took it apart) in that time. I have noticed that the noise only happens if there is sawdust (fines?) in the hopper. The stove was purchased new in July 2012. Thanx again!

Feed Bearing on its way out perhaps?

I suppose it could be, but we bought it new just last July, and had no problems of any kind until we got a load of sawdust (is sawdust the same as "fines"?) in the hopper. Other than this minor annoyance, the stove has been a jewel...Thanx to all!

Yep sawdust and fines are one in the same.

does the fire "change" when this noise is occurring? does it sound like a truck way off in the distance?

if the fire "shakes' as the noise comes and smooths out as it subsides its an air pressure thing, kinda like cavitation in a boat propeller. restricting the intake a bit will usually help if this is the condition im thinking of. you would want to do it while the stove was running AND doing the rumble thing so you can adjust your restriction based on results as its doing it.

FWIW it does not harm the stove at all if this is the issue.

oops , just re-read the post. does your hopper lid have a seal? im not familiar with that model, but with some stoves (usually top feeders) which do not have a sealed hopper the airflow through there is kinda factored in if you have a bunch of fines in the auger sleeve it could be restricting this air as the auger is turning and causing an air difference as well.

its really hard to pinpoint this issue you speak of without a really detailed description or possibly a recording of the noise to "go on"
