Boy what a blunder!

I just janked the Harman P61 auger for some super auger service. I cleaned and buffed the auger and ground down the welds a little so the pellets would flow more smoothly. Afterwards, I gave it a good coat of Dry Moly spray. Then I looked in the auger shaft and Holy Moly! What a severe case of Auger Pox Syndrome (APS)! So many slag pimples on the right and such a big blob of slag on the left! Amazing that it was still feeding wood pellets! ! ! Goes to show Harman's parts are more rugged.

I ground them down and then will apply some dry moly spray.

Nice Job looks nice and smooth. Question though since you scraped off all the coating do you think there is a possibility of rust forming during the summer due to moisture? Can you paint the tube with a high heat paint to protect it ?

Good question?
Have you seen my "Pimp Your Auger" blog?
http://www.eastcoasthearth.com/1_108_Pimp-Up-Your-Auger.html

I smooth it with emory cloth and clean it with acetone. Then as I said in the 1st post, I spray it with CRC Industrial Strength High Temperature "Dry Moly" spray.

I don't know about rugged. Looks like poor quality control and a lack of fit and finishing work during manufacturing to me.

Yes, I agree but it did work for quite a few years like that!

After I cleaned and sprayed the auger, I threw in a new burn pot, gasket and a GA auger motor for good measure. I turned the auger by hand and it turns like butter! Amazingly so much better! It will work better than ever now!

Wow nice job. My Harman is 3 years old and have pushed 9 tons of pellets through her to keep us nice and warm. I have been using cheap Geeen Surememe pellets for $210 a ton.

Question: What pellets do you like? Hard or Soft ? Cheap or expensive ?

thanks.

Please put the Model of your Harman stove in your signature like we do so we can help you better.

I like the Northern Hardwoods such as Maine's choice which is a good bargain and Logic-e and Cubex which are among the best.

You may want to check your auger and shaft sometime to make sure all the welds are good and there are no burrs or drops of slag. I see this can happen to any stove! It does not happen alot but fixing even those tiny burrs and drops of slag will give you many years of trouble free auger rotation!

Nice photos, Don2222!

Thanks heat seeker! My point here of course is, no matter if your stove is new or old you need to carefully inspect your auger shaft and auger flight tube carefully! ! ! Any imperfections will impede performance and reduce the time between auger servicing!

That can't possibly be......it's a Harman! They would NEVER do welding like that.

Got it cheap Pete! It was a P61 with a burned out control panel. Now it is a P61a with brand new Gleason Avery auger motor and works like it never did before!

Not many stoves go from 0 to 60 k BTUs automatically and hold 130 lbs of pellets!

Do you want an Astoria cheap?

Nice job!

Nice job!

Thanks
I just re-painted it from Goldenfire brown to Satin Black!

I used VHT flame proof flat black for the 1st primer coat and added a 60 lb hopper extension!

possibly....but that's one old stove that ole Don refurbed......guessing most of the stoves folks own here aren't even close to the age of that thing.....the thing stood the test of time longer (and most likely better) than some of the units I see in sigs across this post.......nice work, Don

I worked on a P61 stove just like this and I was amazed at how well it still worked. The sheet metal body may be even tougher than the new ones but not by much. I also did an install of a new P61a Anyway it was only after working on Harmans I could tell that they stand the test of time! I can tell now by the uniformly wide flame I posted above that this is the optimum for wood pellet heat.

well, when you are #1, you tend to have a big target on your back, as does Harman......

Hello

Just found a 1994 Harman stove color chart!
So there is:
Golden Fire Brown
Honey-Glo Brown
