Well, the temps took a small dive this evening with the southeasterly wind and while we were at our daughters baseball game the Boss said "you're building a fire when we get home......."

So, if mum ain't happy, AIN'T NOBODY HAPPY! And here I thought I was done burning for the season......

NOT!!

supposed to go down into the mid 40's here in the mountains of SC. I just lit the 81. I do enjoy the ticking as she is warming up.

Thanks, Dave! I just finished installing our antique pine floor! Yes, we're using the blower on it and I'm about 5 seconds away from opening some windows already!

it was a balmy 35 degrees when we woke up this morning, house was at 67°. We like to refer to the ticking sounds the stove makes as "stove talk". When se starts to warm up good, she likes to chat!!

That is a mighty fine set up you have. I live in a cabin that was originally built in 1863 from ax cut timber. It has been updated with electic central heat and air but i dont believe in 350 dollar power bills so if it get below 63 outside my stove will be singing my favorite song. Right now the stove room is around 81 with a window open.

I'd love to see some pics of your place. I love cabins!!

Got the urge after a few weeks of stove down time and cooked off six ECO bricks I had last night. Three bucks worth of bricks on sale and it would have only taken two dollars worth of electricity to keep the place warm but what the heck.

BB, I think we can agree that sometimes there just ain't no substitute for a fire! Just looking at one up close makes ya feel good.....

Thanks LP! Its random width and the old square forged nail holes really look great. I still have to sand and stain it yet. But we love it! It was a TON of work but well worth it.

Looks great! Also there was another guy on the forum that was looking for an insert with an arch like yours. If anyone knows, please let him know..... Good luck all.....

If it wasn't a ton of work you wouldn't appreciate and take as much pride in it. Don't know if you noticed but I am finally getting rid of the old smoke dragon. Gives me a reason to look forward to winter but I can wait patiently. Time to get the cover off the pool soon and get the keyhole firepit in the works.

Its good to know I'm not the only one who has a fire going in May. With temps in the mid 50s, drizzle and an east wind its nice to have a fire to take the chill off plus I was going into withdraws looking at an empty stove. If it keeps this up I won't have any of this years wood left to take me through November next winter

Lit a fire this am. First one in a couple of weeks. Could have had others but turned on the electric baseboard in the kitchen for an hour or so. Stove quickly got up to 500 and chill is now out of the house, will be opening windows by 8 am

I did the whole install, SO. All the stone is off of the mountain by our house. It was a big job but worth it in the end. Go to the link in my signature to see the install pics.

Lookin' great as always Scotty. Curious how you treated the flooring where it meets the hearth. Did you leave a gap between the subfloor and the bottom of the stone to allow the planks to slide underneath or do they butt up against the hearth?

Blue, thanks for the compliment! I SHOULD have done that, but I didn't. Minor oversite, really. I just more or less 'matched' it to the contour of the stone, but left a 3/8" gap between the floor and the stone (to allow for expansion of the wood floor). I'll be putting in some graphite-colored sanded grout caulking (like you would use for around your tub in a tile installation) to fill that gap in......Here's a pic of the gap at that junction:

I'll do a thread of my living room project as soon as I get the floor stained and finished, and the trim installed. That should be pretty much done in the next two weeks....

...I SHOULD have done that,...

Hey man, looks great nonetheless...I noticed that the masonry guys did that on our hearth to accomodate carpeting/flooring when we had our house built.
